Couple years ago, while talking with Maia about the direction and rules of BJJ, he said that if it was up to him, he would shorten the sleeves of the gi to change the game and to eliminate some of the more gi-spesific strategies. He also mentioned that the sleeves where a lot shorter back in the Helio's days.
There has been a lot af talk about BJJ not being "realistic", MMA-aplicable, or "street-ready" anymore. The guard is too advangeous position now days, so takedown- and top-game have suffered.
Many of the new guards require the gripping of the sleeves. Shortening the sleeves would make the use of some new guards a lot harder, and passing the guard easier, since the pants would still be there. All the takedowns would still be there, and the chokes might be easier to sink in. Only the Ezekiel-choke would be eleminated.
I think shortening the sleeves could bring a lot of positive changes to the sport of BJJ. What do you think?
PS: + the short sleeve gi would look bad-ass
