It's a very windy day today and as I was driving to work and waiting on a light, I saw a man's hat blow off and fly down the road as if it had wings. There was a panhandler standing down wind from this man, who like me had witnessed the man's hat fly off his head. Unlike me, however, this panhandler was in perfect position to be a hero and stop the man's hat from blowing away. I sat in my Jeep waiting with bated breath to see if this panhandler could make the snag, only to watch the panhandler stand motionless as he watched the man's hat fly past him.
Not the slightest effort to secure the hat! The panhandler was standing and in great position to catch the hat, but he watched it roll by. This was not a Bill Buckner situation - the panhandler stood like a statue! I looked back at the hatless man as he threw his hands up in the air and continued walking, deciding that the hat was now a lost cause and any pursuit of said hat would be futile.
I realised that this panhandler was only interested in himself, and what the world was willing to offer him. The thought that the hatted man would have rewarded him for his effort in procuring his runaway hat had evidently not occurred to this man. He was not interested in putting in any effort to contribute to his fellow man. I think this is a condition that is widely shared among panhandlers and bums.
I was not a fan of panhandlers before today, but now I refuse to even acknowledge them. Hence forth I will not even make eye contact with them.
