I was wrong about O'Malley/Welch

From the get go I thought Sean was legit, but didn't think he'd be a champion as it seemed like the UFC/Tim Welch were blowing so much smoke up his ass that he wouldn't put in the needed work to become champion. I thought Welch sounded like another Edmund/Fabia/grifter coach when he talked about O'Malley.

However, since his fight with Yan, despite being confident, O'Malley has been surprisingly grounded and realistic about where he/his opponents are at. He even said the fight with Yan was a toss up/tough.

IMO this is a championship mindset, similar to GSP saying his opponents were all his toughest fight ever.

So yeah, mea culpa to Sean and Welch. And whatever Welch is doing/saying to him, it's working in terms of technical ability, but also psychological.

Could be in for a long run as champion. It's weird because despite all of the showy stuff (hair, tats, cars) it seems like O'Malley is actually a fairly boring guy. If you took all that shit away he'd be in like Jake Shields level of charisma.
 
I’ve never bought into the hype, but I’ve never seen anything to suggest O’Malley would be anything other than a top tier fighter.

Having an open relationship could potentially mean that you would be fighting dudes to get off your wife.

It's a sign of confidence, imo.
 
Hate the baby talk his coach does to him during and between rounds. Clearly something is working for them though. He seems to have ditched a lot of the arrogance after the Yan fight, so much so I felt like he kind of blew this last post fight call out.
 
seems like tim welch is a pretty good coach. but, we'll have to see if he brings up any other fighters. is he head coach to any other ufc fighters?

Have you seen his wife? I mean if they’re both allowed to bang other people I don’t think O’Malley is the one getting jealous there..
 
O'Malley's visual style out of the cage pisses off the older generation which results in them being biased against him. But you could see from early on that the kid has something special. He's a phenomenal striker, lightning fast, great footwork, great fight IQ. Good defensive wrestling. Pretty much every attribute a MMA striker would want to have.

If you take away all of the neon attire, outside of the cage he's just pretty much just a weed smoking nerd. Some of his videos (his dummy "practice" stuff) are pretty funny though:

UFC? I don't think so, but he has talked about having guys compete on the regional circuit.

Having a large number of top tier fighters is not a reliable indication of the quality of a coach though, IMHO.
 
Besides being a great fighter he seems like a pretty good guy. There's nothing to hate on besides his fashion style.

Admittedly, I was a bit mad when he dyed his hair the Ecuadorian colors for the first Chito fight. Bringing people's country and heritage into your trashtalk is a douchebag move. Especially when it's a small country, it's a bit like family, you just don't do it. But since then he's really toned it down. His trash talk is mild these days and he shows respect for his opponents. I'm a fan.

I think you are off on this point. I am old and while I am not interested in his Social Meida stuff and the hair and tats are not my thing I have always seen him as a good fighter. First fight of his I saw was the Soukhamthath fight and while so many younger Sherdoggers (I assume younger being old myself and they talk like my kids) were on about him being soft and girlie etc I saw him fighting thru with every reason to give up in that last round.

His KO of Eddie Wineland proved he was more then just a prospect to me. His win over Yan showed he could be a champion and KO-ing Aljo after having a strong first round and defending 2 TD attempts.

All the Sherdoggers freaking out about Sean have always come across as young teens struggling with their sense of self. I haven't really noticed anyone giving off Grumpy Old Man vibes in complaining about him.

That’s fair. Perhaps they might not be old but they’re definitely struggling to reconcile the idea that a dude that looks like he could be a circus employee is actually a world champion cage fighter.
 
I always thought O’malley was being pushed by the UFC. Since the Yan fight, I think he was being pushed by the judges as well.
 
Sean sounds very disciplined and commited from what I hear on his podcasts etc, has good routines and doesn't do crazy shit, I think people underestimate his work ethic or are just not aware of it
