I think I'm done answering the door

maybe it did, I just think it's not cute, it's not american, I think it's weird to advertise that kind of thing. Especially in most of the areas I see them, out in the sticks where robbers won't even come in the first place unless they know what's in your house, which is an inside job sorta thing.
Robberies in rural areas are a problem and you need to do even more to protect yourself.

Thieves watch what time you go to work and then they have all day to search your house because there are no neighbors to report suspicious activity. So adding cameras and signs and whatever else might help deter them is a good idea

theft isn't even that common in the middle of the city, are they out there? of course but most of the folks I know have never been through a robbery/burglary. And I can't imagine people going out to the sticks, midday, midnight, whatever. Most criminals stay and rob their own communities.

I just think people like making macho proclamations. I just want you to leave me the fuck alone, if I'm delivering your package, don't come out in sunglasses like dirty harry asking me why I was looking around your camper (I wasn't). I tell you, the people and their attitudes. I've been around some bad dudes and most of them don't act like that, I don't want trouble but there have been times when I've told people, "I can get very violent if you want." Just stupid and I don't have time for it really.

what if it's two hot girl caught in the rain?

I know, and humans are by nature territorial but I do delivery and I don't like people accosting me or acting like I'm doing something they didn't ask for, which has happened. If you're that fucking paranoid, make a cement case and stay in it.

The suspicion of the city is draining enough, I just don't get it out in the sticks where no one even knows to go in the first place.

People are fucking thieves, why that is, I don't know but friends and family as well as strangers lift shit from me. Most of it's stupid shit (just had a second shipping tape canister go missing) but for whatever reason, humans are curious, thieving creatures, pretty much have to accept that. And it's people you know in most cases.
Just a few signs can potentially keep folks who do not even have the things on those signs, safe. It is much like how people would sometimes have dummy security systems. It’s a cheap way to deter the more easily cowed criminals.

It’s not always about someone wanting to act like Billy Badass. Sometimes it’s just one of the cheapest and easiest ways to help with your homes safety.

thing is, it's only in certain areas where backass country fucks would live. It's never in the city where you would think there would be more of a need for that. It's just weird and makes me feel a little anxious. People are so xenophobic in the places where they don't need to be, I doubt anyone even goes out to some of these places. You know what I really think is a part of it? Isolation, people get weird when they get isolated. Mountain men type of crazy. But there is a lot of billy badass machismo in there too, most men in our country are warped that way. My stepdad is and always has been, always had the guns, always looking out the window, he's about 80 now, never been robbed or burglarized so what was all that for?

Yea I stopped answering a long time ago. It's like you said it's nothing but sales calls and church stuff. Occasionally a lawn guy. Just recently it was some kids who hit a ball into my backyard but they just went back there and grabbed it themselves when I didn't answer. Which is fine by me.

That reminds me, I was doing some work for a customer, it was a demo project and one chunk flew into the neighbor's yard. This neighbor just tried to sue the pants off my customer, I don't know the outcome, didn't ask but I know it wasn't good. I just said, "fuck" and knew that i didn't want to be in the middle of the BS, I snuck over, grabbed the wood and got out undetected. I told my customer and he freaked out and I laughed, he told me, "it's no laughing matter they are assholes" ya, people man.

My wife isn't that crazy about it but she leans a bit that way about people going into our backyard. We have the comast/xfinity box in our backyard which services who knows how many people around us. So sometimes Xfinity has to get back there and they have the right to do it legally whether we want it or not. She gets pissed if they go back there without asking. She doesn't confront anyone but I have to hear her bitching about it. She's even said she wishes we picked a house without the box back there I'm just like "is it that serious?".

I will say that her only good point is she's afraid of letting the dogs out without knowing they are back there and someone getting bit or the dogs getting hurt. Which is a valid excuse but I know for a fact she would have an issue with this even if we didn't have dogs.

Well, as mentioned, people are territorial way past the point of rationality.

I just saw a docu on a couple homeowners who bullied some guy who was just some lone gay guy who wanted to be left alone, just wouldn't stop fucking with him and the guy snapped and killed both of them and then himself. Some people just don't know when to stop and it's odd. Back when I did landscaping/moving/labor, it seemed like most of my customers had major issues with their neighbors. Of course, my thing was just not getting in the middle but sometimes, well, shit will fly over to someone's property whether you want it to or not, fortunately, I never got mixed up in that and just tell people, "everyone loves me" which is generally true but that can change in a heartbeat.

Nothing pisses me off more than door to door salesman. Leave me the fuck alone!!!!

Luckily my last home had a long driveway and was hidden in the trees and was far off the road and my new home has a long driveway and you cant really see the house from the road.

At my first home though, I was right in town and I got all kinds of salesmen and church members at my door and it used to really piss me off.

I have a decent sized perimeter wall with a padlocked gate covered by security cameras without a doorbell.

i have no interest in random people turning up unannounced.

We have a notice that says something along the lines of " No salespersons, no religious or political persons and no cold callers " .

Had someone over the last 10 years ignore it twice, first time I tapped the sign and he apologised and left. The second time he was an Australian guy who was a bit of a twat , started into the sales spiel and was trying to argue that he wasn't a salesperson and not a cold caller...I mean, how stupid are you, I didn't invite you therefore you are a cold caller and you are trying to get me to buy something, that makes you a salesperson...

I think he felt he could argue as although we had our old German Shepherd she was trapped behind a child safety gate so he felt secure.... unfortunately I don't think he has much experience of the breed because I just yelled at her " Molly, come girl" and she crouched and jumped the gate and came to my side barking at him . He fucked off .

I wish I didn't install the camera. I caught my food delivery guy steal a flower from my yard. TBF I caught some South Asians doing the same. The only time I got pissed is when someone tried to dig part of the plant up.

For years people would tell me they don't answer the door and I resisted also stopping, as to stop is depressing and kind of admitting defeat and acknowledging that the society you grew up in is gone and has degenerated. Still I also stopped (unless I'm expecting someone).

Irish Travellers 'happened to be coming back from a job over there *waves arm vaguely* with tarmac left over and it would be a shame to waste it'

Any legit person can use post, phone or email or push a note through the door. At a pinch they can call through the letterbox and I'll recognise someone I know's voice.

I don't answer hidden or unknown numbers on my phone either.

If I lived in a better area I would start answering the door again. There are fewer and fewer areas where that would be advisable though.

It’s a good theory, it’s never anything good on the other slide of that door

Nothing a bullet .22 can't fix.

I could see it, honestly there is nowhere you won't be able to deal with the worst aspects of human nature. When I do delivery, I get codes to places and just think about how, who these delivery companies hire, there's a lot of room for larceny. I think they'll only check a driving record and a cursory background check. One of trumps first deportations was an Amazon Flex Driver wanted in mexico for some sort of child sex shit. Not long after that, some Karen meets me to get her package, German shepherd at her side, I greet her and she asks where I'm from. I've been around so many different types of people that I have a strange, what sounds like an accent, but it's really just a mix of Black,Native American that I've never lost. I said, "From Seattle" she said, "originally?" I said yes and told her my life story. Now, I don't know if she was being friendly or grilling me for citizen status. It's so hard telling what people are meaning in such brief encounters. The reason I've only been able to do the job is that human interaction is kept to a minimum. Every other job I've had it's always been a strain dealing with other people's issues and it's never been worth roughly what I make now.

Anyway, I had an old jazz teacher who would tell students whining about anything related to other folks being around them, he said, "you can't be around all these people without having boundary issues" realistic, simple and true. People are a pain in the ass yet, they say, we'd all die without other human contact.
