I often think about how much nicer things must have been a few generations ago.

for one thing, there were WAY fewer people around. as a result, more land for everyone, the opinion of the individual carried much more weight, closer-knit communities who helped each other.

England was disgusting in those times.

Littered with all manner of diseases. The hygiene was awful and sewerage systems were dismal (a lot of shit around the place).

A lot of the food was ghastly (barrels of salted pork) and work was hard, long hours without many rights.

Rarely could you have promiscuous sex, and if you could you’d both be stinky and spotty down there, yuck.

The population of London was 650,000, which is still pretty big, still most people lived in the countryside or small towns.

Distance was much more meaningful.

There must be an academic term for the formative period? of our culture. I don't know it though. The sort of default period that we refer back to, anyway that is further back than 1750. Closer to Robin Hood's day (12th/13th centuries). Swords, horses, watermills, flaxen-haired maidens in castles etc. Although some elements of our culture go back a lot further. You would have to go back further than 1750 to get back to a largely uninhabited and to some degree dangerous environment as well. Highwaymen, pirates, wolves and bears, no guns to shoot them with, the Wildwood etc. I think we lost a lot when we lost that. Playing an FPS on God mode is unfulfilling, you can't have an engaging story without antagonists posing a credible threat etc.

There are a lot of places like that around the world if you bother to look for them.

Thread is just pointless whining though and I'm pretty sure TS would never give up modern convenience to live like that.
 
Instead of dummies learning how to do it themselves, they learned it's much easier to simply go where others have already done the hard part.

This isn't brought up enough.

We all know how rare bathing was back then but there was no deodorant... also no toilet paper... and women probably didn't shave their legs, armpits or anything else... and there was no toothpaste.

Even the hottest bitch in the shire was a Boise 2.
 
I think peak times for a Westerner were 1960's.
Lots of useful stuff already, but much further from cyberpunk dystopia than now.
