I just miss guys like BJ Penn

This is unfair. BJ and Conor weighed the exact same at WW while cutting no weight - 168. Both are very moderately sized modern featherweights by today's standards, where as guys like Max walk around at 180. Not sure how Conor did 'not fight successfully above his weight class' when he is legit the only lineal male champ-champ in UFC history, 2 for 3 at welterweight (beat every fighter he faced there), only fighter in UFC history to have KO's at fw/lw/ww, and was champ-champ in cage warriors as well. That is the very definition of not only success above one's weight class, but copious amounts of it. Like BJ, losing fights as a washed out version of himself does not change what happened in their prime years.
Conor didn't bust a grape at 170 which is the weight class above his natural 155 LW division. He has exactly zero wins over Top 10 WW fighters. BJ Penn actually won the UFC belt at 170 WW division i.e. the division above his natural 155 LW division. Not comparable.

What? People these days DON'T move up to fight the champion? Ahah we literally see it like every other day.

My problem is with contenders staying out a year or more waiting for the division to go to shit so they can get a shot at the title.

But if management rewards it yelling at clouds is all I have.

You gotta get you some of those Rumble on the Rocks t shirts.

Do you still have some of the old ones from back in the day? .
Who is the best guy(s) you’ve ever been in a ring or cage with.

like ring magazine does a “the best I’ve faced” .

And it’s questions to boxers of different categories. Like the craftiest . Beast chin. Fastest hands Biggest puncher. Smartest. Best footwork. Best defense. I forget all the categories.

it’s a pretty cool read.

My guy, Conor has fought the large bulk of his career at FW and is undefeated there as well. A man that walks around 168 max is not a welterweight, atleast not anymore. Making 45 was so easy that they never employed a nutrition coach until his knee injury rendered weight cuts harder as he could not do as much cardio - Lockhart got him to 45 no problem and said he could get him to 35 with no problem. Previous, Kav was literally using Google.

As far as "couldn't bust a grape". Why, because he did not put Diaz out cold? Who has ever done that at 70? Diaz nearly just beat Leon and Leon did not drop Nate as many times as Conor. Cerrone had great success at WW too and is a legitimate WW as well, an Conor finished him in mere seconds.

This is the problems with Conor haters: criticisms can be made of Conor, but you guys always make the wrong ones, say he is some terrible cowardly fighter who ducks hard challenges, has no KO ability and engage in other hyperbole. Before every fight 'he will get exposed', and if he beats the guy the guy is a can...never was any good'. it's constantly a moving goal post and revisionist history.

UFC RANKINGS
https://www.ufc.com/rankings
McGregor is ranked #9 in the LW division. He hasn't won a LW bout since Nov 2016. You won't find McGregor or Nate Diaz in the Welterweight (170 lbs) rankings despite multiple fights at that weight class and the UFC generally giving these two fighters a favorable boost to help with ratings and PPV buys since they are popular. McGregor is a natural LW and he did cut a lot of weight to fight at 145 where he was much bigger, taller and longer than his opponents. He had a nice run at FW including winning the FW belt. Never defended the belt and never fought again at 145 because he probably can't make that weight cut anymore. McGregor has a 1 - 3 record at LW and splitting with Nate Diaz at 170 including get submitted by a gatekeeper with only 10 days notice isn't super impressive. Beating Cerrone at 170 might have been impressive if that fight happened 4 years earlier before Cerrone was receiving brutal beatdowns on a regular basis. The not busting a grape comment at 170 means he beat nobody of "importance" in the 170 division at the time he fought those opponents. Beating a washed-up Cerrone and splitting with Nate Diaz doesn't make you a player in the 170 division.

Yeah, but you have to recognize the era. He was able to do that because there was a lack of well rounded fighters.

He is a beast and a badass in his prime though, and has some exceptional wins on his resume.

Going up a weight class to take on 35-3 5x defending champ Matt Hughes and putting him away inside of a round is crazy shit. Matt was top 3 P4P and had been absolutely dominant in his UFC run up til that point, and even won his next 6 fights after that.

It is too bad that Baby J didn't have the discipline to really live up to his talent and potential.

That hughes win is very underrated

Machida, Gracie's x2, Hughes x3, GSP x2, Fitch, Diaz, Rory, gomi, pulver x2, Frankie x3 Sherk, Ludwig, Stevenson, Florian, sanchez, all of them pretty much killers and in their primes
