I just miss guys like BJ Penn

Regardless of what you thought of BJ he fought the best in his prime. When he left the UFC he left to fight the #1 guy Bang who beat Jens. Jens left w the belt. Then he fought Lyoto at Heavyweight.

Then came back to the UFC moved up to WW and fought prime GSP. No one does this these days. They move up to fight guys like Bisping, like Eddie, like Jan.

They aren't moving up to fight Jon Jones or Usman.
Yup except for Izzy, he won the title in Oct 2019 and Jones last fought in Feb 2020 a fight between them wasn’t possible.

Fought all contenders in the division, even gave Romero an undeserving title shot just to stay active. Moved up and fought the LHW champ when there was no clear cut # 1 contender despite a 20-30 pound weight difference.

Izzy = BJ reincarnated when you think about it

I believe Penn already debuted at WW, and was WW champion before fighting Bang.

Bang moved up in weight to fight Penn.

When Penn returned to UFC, he returned the the weight class he was at, and champion of.
Yes he already beat Hughes and left the UFC because of Dana White. The fight with Bang was at 170 because they both agreed they did not want to cut weight (source - BJ’s autobiography). However in context it makes sense to think of the fight as a LW fight because BJ just beat Gomi and Bang just beat Jens, the UFC champ.

Just scrap. Which I used the Goldie just scrap boys. And printed the slogan on a tshirt and I wear a just scrap boys shirt to work everyday.

I only have 2 but I pretend I have dozens.

GSP, Hughes, or Gomi weren’t some of the best at the time? Lay off the crack pipe.

lyoto was a monster in his prime. Pulver was in his prime the top guy. he fought all the top guys in the UFC and then left the ufc and fought all the top guys outside of it.

Here's the question? Who didn't BJ fight in his prime around his division? Like Anderson is 2 divisions up, I bet BJ would have took it if he beat GSP lol idk who he ducked

I really would have loved to see Marinovich Penn vs WEC Pettis and Bendo, and Strikeforce Giblert. People don’t realize by the time BJ was destroying Sherk and Kenflo he had already been beating ranked fighters for almost 9 years.

no lol

Izzy is like GSP but he lost to the bisping lol He never moved up to fight Jon Jones. He moved up as soon as Jon moved up and still lost.

BJ beat hughes when hughes was top 3 P4P if not #1

BJ?! Is that you bruddah?! Drink some water bruddah! I know it was a rough night last night. Motrin and coconut water will get you right again.

Bj is a crazy sob. Dude could’ve stayed at lw back then and beat fools left and right. Instead, he chose the hard way, taking on really big challenges.

False, McGregor is absolutely not replicating BJ Penn's ability to fight successfully above his weight class. In addition, Penn actually defending his belts and won title defenses.

"Those days were great, but you can't replicate them now"

- HE'S NOT REPLICATING THEM DAYS!

What's wrong with you?

Bumping up to fight a contender is more noble than going up to fight a champion or defending champ?

Not knocking BJ just the merit of this point.

There was no realistic timeline to fight Jones.

Ha hadn’t even defended the title once when Jones/Reyes was booked. The Costa fight was booked in July and Jon vacated the belt a month later.

Oh, please. Lyoto was green as hell when he fought BJ. Gomi was coming off a loss. He lost vs GSP. Hughes was an amazing win. Not many people saw that one coming.

BJ beat Hughes
Moving up 20 pounds (equivalent of 2 weight classes).

Jan isn’t some bum, he’s 9-1 in his last 10 and destroyed Reyes who most believe Jones lost to.

Someone once compared BJ to Ken Griffey JR, another prodigy. Griffey's career was arguably overshadowed by A-Rod, but....

...just imagine what Griffey's #'s could have been if he'd been cheating like A-Rod.

Now extrapolate that out to BJ Penn.

Yes it would have been cool to see BJ vs Gomi when Gomi was on his insane KO streak, but at the time Gomi was 14-1 Shooto Champ and had beaten Rumina Sato, and KTFO Mishima
