The following quote was from a member here discussing OSP's pay for his fight with Jones. First things first, unless something has finally come out from OSP about pay, we don't really know if he got a PPV bonus or not. That said, the person who's quote I am discussing, was operating under the assumption that OSP was only paid 55k for the fight, which in his eyes is more than enough. Again, I am NOT trying to rehash the last two threads about how much OSP made. It's all been said. I'm just talking about the notion that Fighter A making 55k for a single fight is 'more than enough.'

As it's been stated, he probably got a PPV bonus, so it probably is more. But let's pretend for a moment that he did not get a PPV bonus, and that his fight wasn't even the main event.

Forgive me if I find difficult to sympathize with an individual who made 55k in 25 minutes.

Your idea that even just 55k is a lot for 25 minutes, shows a deep misunderstanding of the sport, that is objectively ignorant and shortsighted. If you think a fighter is only paid for "25 minutes" of work, then you really don't pay any attention to fighting, which is odd since you're a big enough fan to join a message board. Fighters don't simply wake up the morning of the fight and say "Well today is one of three days I work this year, honey... I'll see you when it get home!" There's weeks, and even months of preparing. They push themselves to their mental and physical breaking points day after day, and have their diet strictly monitored. And now with testing, some dude can just show up at their house at 6am and demand they piss in a cup in front of them.

Mr. Lawler slipped and fell into the copy machine. Twelve times in a row.

And then you have to consider the "work" that they do. This isn't sitting at a desk for a day, or even doing some heavy lifting at a blue collar job. Dude's are trying to kick their fucking heads in. Hell, OSP got his arm busted and kept "working" for the rest of his "shift." And on top of that, this arm fracture absolutely impacts his ability to "work" for months.

BJ Penn notices a coworker has had a really bad fall and helps him to his feet...

In short, the idea that a fighter only works for 15-25 minutes at time, 2-4 times a year, is preposterous. And the idea that their work is remotely like the average person's work is laughable. Until you have someone like Jones trying to kick your ribs, or Mark Hunt trying to crack your chin with a right hand, at your job on a regular basis, it's pretty safe to assume your job is not like theirs.

Mark Hunt reacts to news of his demotion.

Try to show some respect to the fighters that risk serious injury for our entertainment.

Hey i think everyone thinks he shoulda gotten more money, but there are contracts, and he said yes to that money,so what can one do? They could easily have given him something on the side for coming through for them, who knows?

You couldn't have just added this to that thread? You'll probably come up with some snarky response, but what about this warranted ANOTHER thread?

Oh Jesus, man. Did you read the thread? I seriously don't want to rehash two threads about it. It's been beaten to death. I was bringing up the notion that fighters only work for 15-25 minutes. And that the work is totally like normal work.

Yes, it does, because I have seen the "he only worked for 15 minutes" idea floated out in probably twenty threads here. It has nothing to do directly with OSP.

So military men must deserve seven figures. Maybe even per conflict.

OSP made more than 55k don't worry

Fighter get locker room bonus all the time.

Him in the main event + short notice.
Probably made twice on the back hand.

Don't forget the Reebok money ;)

So it's all good for OSP.

Apples to oranges.

But at the very least they deserve what they are promised - life long care for their sacrifices.

I absolutely think OSP received more then 55k. Not a chance he wasn't taken care of for stepping up...

If it was 55K then people need to get a grip on what the net of 55k is once taxes, training costs, additional corner men, and medical is taken out. Even with no state tax, nearly 40% is taken federally. Then calculate for all of the other costs, which I imagine can vary, but they are not insignificant.

In the real world of adults with adult bills, the NET amount that OSP receives out of 55k gross is in fact GROSS. 3 fights a year at that compensation level, with the costs associated, barely qualifies him as middle class in most American cities. I am sure he has some additional sponsor compensation, not as much prior to the reebok deal, but I'm sure there is some... Even then I'd suggest he makes less then a tenured teacher and or veteran Cop...

Barely Middle Class and he just headlined a UFC PPV.

How so? They're both jobs. Instead of Mark Hunt threatening to crack their chin, they're facing down Islamofascists trying to kill them with high powered weapons and explosive devices.

UFC fighters are promised whatever their contract says, and that's what the UFC delivers.

Well you have to consider that most men in uniform are not on the front lines. And you have to consider that some of them would do it for pretty much free, as they're motivation is built on ideology, not capitalism.

I think the minimum UFC pay should be 90 k to show, that way, assume 30% for professional training camp, team , and management, they would make 60 k before taxes, and if the fight twice a year , they would be living on 120k before taxes which is a very comfortable living for the lowest level.
