Example 1:

Sean O'Malley and Song Yadong both come out trying to read the other in a feeling-out process. They land about the same amount of strikes, nothing stands out as being of more impact.
Then we also have the criteria of octagon control or being the more pressuring fighter, and takedowns that score. There O'Malley would seem to have the disadvantage, so if the judges
are deterred from scoring draws and MUST give the round to somebody - that first round could only have gone to Yadong.

However, all three judges (Eric Colon, Chris Lee, Ron McCarthy) thinks it was a 10-9 round for O'Malley... So I must have misunderstood the scoring criteria?

Example 2:

Justin Gaethje gets the edge in a close fourth round and is in the lead, so he only needs to survive round 5 while Paddy has to go for a finish. And then that's exactly what happens in the
round. All initiative and pressure suddenly coming from Paddy, unlike earlier in the fight. Landing some really good shots and backing up Justin at times. However, it should be said that
Gaethje is punishing Pimblett too, in the breakaways he's landing hard shots that levels it out a bit. Paddy gets a takedown as well, though, and spends some time in top control. To me
it was clear that he did that little extra needed to win, while Justin focused on counters. Again, if draws are a big no no, then this round could only have gone to Pimblett.

However, two of the judges (Sal D'Amato, Derek Cleary) thinks it was a 10-9 round for Gaethje... So I must have misunderstood the scoring criteria? Mike Bell saw it like me, though.

The effectiveness of each fighter’s Successful Striking and Grappling, as defined above, will be thedetermining factor in the scoring of the vast majority of rounds. However, if a judge absolutely cannotdetermine even a marginal advantage in either, the judge will defer to either Aggressiveness orFighting Area Control, whichever impacted the round in a more significant manner.
"octagon control" and/or agression is almost insignificant. I guess the judges thought they could determine a marginal advantage in the striking.

Personally felt it was a tossup round and the outrage over it make actual controversies a disservice.

People see what they want to see in most cases, judges arent immune.

Winning round based on control. If the judges thought the striking was identical. How do you they did think that.

Natalia Silva was an even worse decision. It seems like all you have to do is win round three (in a 3 rd fight) to get the decision with these morons.

The problem is your broad, narrative based descriptions of the rounds.

I think most were in agreement that the O'Malley first round was competitive but he was mostly in control and landing more, and Yadong went for a late TD hoping to steal the round, but judges haven't really put any weight on late TDs with 0 gnp for years.

Gaethje/Paddy 5th round was split among the judges, so obviously a close round that could have been scored for either. I myself would have given it to Paddy by a very small margin, but the whole fight was more strikes vs harder strikes, and most judges will usually score 1 bomb landing over 3 or 4 smaller punches, hence Paddy actually landing more throughout the fight but Justin having multiple knockdowns and Paddy's face looking like hamburger. Paddy didn't get any TDs, he was 0/3 in the 5th. He had several good flurries while Justin was landing the harder breakaway shots, so really jusy depends on what the individual judge valued more.
