Example 1:
Sean O'Malley and Song Yadong both come out trying to read the other in a feeling-out process. They land about the same amount of strikes, nothing stands out as being of more impact.
Then we also have the criteria of octagon control or being the more pressuring fighter, and takedowns that score. There O'Malley would seem to have the disadvantage, so if the judges
are deterred from scoring draws and MUST give the round to somebody - that first round could only have gone to Yadong.
However, all three judges (Eric Colon, Chris Lee, Ron McCarthy) thinks it was a 10-9 round for O'Malley... So I must have misunderstood the scoring criteria?
Example 2:
Justin Gaethje gets the edge in a close fourth round and is in the lead, so he only needs to survive round 5 while Paddy has to go for a finish. And then that's exactly what happens in the
round. All initiative and pressure suddenly coming from Paddy, unlike earlier in the fight. Landing some really good shots and backing up Justin at times. However, it should be said that
Gaethje is punishing Pimblett too, in the breakaways he's landing hard shots that levels it out a bit. Paddy gets a takedown as well, though, and spends some time in top control. To me
it was clear that he did that little extra needed to win, while Justin focused on counters. Again, if draws are a big no no, then this round could only have gone to Pimblett.
However, two of the judges (Sal D'Amato, Derek Cleary) thinks it was a 10-9 round for Gaethje... So I must have misunderstood the scoring criteria? Mike Bell saw it like me, though.
