The man te dethrone Canelo as the new superstar admits

He couldn't handle the pressure.

I for one am happy for his honesty and didn't really lose much stock

Fast-rising prospect Yair Rodriguezwas on his way to becoming the UFC’s next big name. After an impressive UFC run that was showcased by a decisive second-round TKO victory over two-weight world champion B.J. Penn, the 25-year-old fighter even aimed to surpass Canelo Alvarez and become Mexico’s ultimate combat sports superstar.

”I couldn’t handle the pressure. It exploded. I was being really hard on myself,” Rodriguez said. “I was becoming crazy, honestly. It was weird stuff.”

”I wasn’t listening to my coaches. I was getting mad at training,” he said, referring to his camp in preparation for the Edgar fight. “I thought I was right about certain stuff. I think during the process of growing and becoming a star, you just stop trusting a lot of people. I started putting myself in a bubble and it really affected me.”

Ok, first off: I think he is a very good fighter, and I think he might even become a star one day. He's got a lot of potential. Besides, good on him for being honest about how he feels.

That said, I think he would have lost regardless. Pressure, no pressure, he wasn't ready for Edgar. Simple as that.

“I wasn’t listening to my coaches..”

This guy is extremely uncoachable that’s his problem. He’s moved camps like 3 times already.

Every single coach that he’s been with has tried to scale back all that stupid spinning shit and wild shit he keeps throwing and he thinks they’re trying to ‘control’ him. That’s his problem, he refuses to learn fundamentals.

lol its debatable if conor is as big of a star as canelo, yet yair was going to surpass him?

LOL at people making fun of him.
If he'd have beaten Frankie, most of those retards would be agreeing he was "the real deal".

There's no shame in losing to Frankie, and even better that he took the beating and learned from it.

Yair Rodriguez is good. Frankie Edgar is great. The end.

Canelo is a mega star, but I’ll give Yair some props, he’s aiming high.

Been a while since our last veiled "Boxing shits on MMA" thread.

Good to have you back @Marc A

At least he's doing the right thing now, working on his skills rather than forcing fights over and over and wearing himself out. Who knows, maybe his ground game is a lot stronger next time out. Not everyone is going to be Frankie Edgar. I'd actually be interested in him fighting a guy like Aldo who doesn't go for as many takedowns.

Also, I don't believe he ever said himself he was going to pass Canelo. Just another BS MMA media story line.

Where laughing at th fact that he was going to “surpass” Canelo, not because he lost to Edgar or isn’t legit. You could be legit and not be a star and vice versa

Lol, his shit style is not going to work at the highest levels, he’s not fighting BJ again

jair is bigger than canelo who is a lot bigger than conner

I thought Cain was the pride of Mexico despite you know .... not actually being mexican or speaking mexican.

I mean he does have brown pride tattoo.

So Yair > Cain?

problem is the excuses. it's like he only lost to frankie because eh was "well over his head" or something like that. nope, frankie is just way better than him

the guy had a split decision against fucking alex caceres and everyone though he was some world beater because of the bj fight and some retarded spinning kicks

Here you go champ

If I become a champion, if I become the first Mexican UFC champion, I can become bigger because I will be the first one. There are already a lot of Mexican boxers, great boxers. I’m not saying Canelo is not great. He’s great. But I think I can become bigger than that because I’ll be the first one.”
