I am an ex-Scientologist. (LONG read)

Hey all...

I'm back in NYC for round 2. The weather was UNBELIEVABLE today. Seriously so nice. I talked to a hell of a lot more people this time around. My voice almost gave out at the end.

Check back in the next few days for pics and vids from today's action.

Good. Fuck'n. Times!

AM - Australian of the Year supports Senate Scientology probe 10/03/2010

TONY EASTLEY: The Australian of the Year, Professor Patrick McGorry, says there should be a Senate inquiry into the Church of Scientology.

Mr McGorry, a world renowned mental health expert is being supported in his call by two other respected Australian psychiatrists. All are behind Independent Senator, Nick Xenophon's efforts to set up an investigation into the Church's activities.

From Canberra, Sabra Lane reports.

SABRA LANE: Professor Patrick McGorry, a respected authority on youth mental health says it's time to put the Church of Scientology under the federal parliamentary microscope.

PATRICK MCGORRY: It's a bit like they're the deniers of the reality of mental illness, which is not only incredibly irresponsible and dangerous, but something that has to be challenged.

SABRA LANE: The Church has strong views about psychiatric medicine, and the Professor says those teachings should be examined in a public forum, like a Senate inquiry.

PATRICK MCGORRY: I am supportive of it, because I'm concerned that any restriction or any discouragement of access to mental health care will cost lives, and result in unnecessary disability for people.

SABRA LANE: Professor Ian Hickie - the executive director of the Brain and Mind Institute supports a Senate inquiry, as does Professor Louise Newman, the president of the Royal Australian College of Psychiatrists.

LOUISE NEWMAN: This is not a trivial issue and I think for far too long, these sort of extremist views have hidden behind a group which describes itself as being an organised religion.

SABRA LANE: Again, Professor McGorry:

PATRICK MCGORRY: The whole mental health field would support this call for an inquiry and it's overdue in fact - in my opinion.

SABRA LANE: The Professor met Senator Nick Xenophon yesterday. In Parliament last year the Senator raised serious allegations of abuse, blackmail and forced abortions within the Church. Back then the church claimed he'd abused parliamentary privilege.

But the Senator's pushed for an inquiry since, with support from the Greens and as yet, he doesn't have enough support from either the Government or Opposition Senators but they'll be voting on this enquiry before the end of next week.

NICK XENOPHON: I was heartened by the Prime Minister's statement last year that he was concerned about these allegations. These are concerns that need to be dealt with in a transparent and robust manner. The way to do that is a Senate inquiry.

The Church of Scientology can be represented at that inquiry, they can give their submissions but it would be an open and transparent process.

SABRA LANE: Are you obsessed by this?

NICK XENOPHON: I've got an obligation to the victims of Scientology who've come forward with very serious allegations to see this through. To do anything else would be abandoning those victims. To do anything else would be walking away from a very important issue.

SABRA LANE: Scientology of Church spokesman, Cyrus Brooks:

CYRUS BROOKS: I say that's the wrong way for them to go. They're, uh, getting into the field of religion and they better stay in the field of mental health. It's not the role of the Parliament and there's already frame works in place for people who have made complaints. Many dissenters have said that and, I think, that's a true statement.

TONY EASTLEY: Church of Scientology spokesman Cyrus Brooks, ending that report by Sabra Lane.

CYRUS BROOKS: I say that's the wrong way for them to go. They're, uh, getting into the field of religion and they better stay in the field of mental health.

I wonder if Mr. Brooks is aware that the subtitle of Hubbard's foundational tract Dianetics is...wait for it....THE MODERN SCIENCE OF MENTAL HEALTH!!!!

If Scientologists can have an opinion on psychiatry(and believe you me, they do), psychiatrists can certainly have an opinion on Scientology.

Independent Senator Nick Xenophon has slammed the major parties for blocking his moves for an inquiry into the Church of Scientology.

Rudd, Abbott 'running scared on Scientology' - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Senator Xenophon has been calling for a full inquiry into the church since revealing claims of forced abortions and other abuses in Parliament last year.

Today he accused Prime Minister Kevin Rudd of hiding behind process and vowed to continue to fight for further examination of Scientology in Australia.

"There is a certain cowardice in turning your backs on people who ask for help and ask just to be heard," he said.

"I ask Kevin Rudd and [Opposition Leader] Tony Abbott, what is it about forced abortions you do not want to know about?

"What is it about false imprisonment that you don't want to know about? I will not turn my backs on the victims of Scientology. I will not let this lie. This issue will not go away."

Senator Xenophon now says he will move another motion for an inquiry into the church, which he says will focus on specific allegations made against it, next week.

Today Senator Xenophon moved for a broader inquiry into the tax-free status of religions when it was clear he did not have the numbers for his original Scientology probe.

However, the Opposition and Government blocked the motion.

Senator Xenophon said the Government told him it could not support the tax inquiry because it could pre-empt the still-to-be released Henry Tax Review.

Special Minister of State Joe Ludwig says the tax-free status of various organisations has already been extensively covered by other inquiries and another is not needed.

"Based on this detailed and comprehensive record of an analysis and in light of two current review reports before the Government, we will not be supporting this motion today," he said.

The Greens supported the motion but that was not enough to get it passed.

"I do object and I know many other Australians object to millions of dollars being siphoned off from the public purse because we haven't refined our ability to say a dangerous cult ought not be getting that money," Greens leader Bob Brown said.

Liberal Senator Eric Abetz expressed sympathy for anyone who had suffered under the Church of Scientology but said the Senate was not the right place to hear their stories.

He also questioned whether a Senate inquiry would stop people being "brainwashed" by various organisations.

"Whilst the motion on the face of it looks relatively innocuous, talks about a general inquiry into matters tax and charitable status generally, there is no doubt from the speeches of Senators Xenophon and Brown ... that it would not just be a general discussion of matters taxation," he said.

ABC's Four Corners program also this week broadcast allegations from ex-members of Scientology of forced abortions, pressure to work extreme hours and being forced to hand over large sums of money.

Hahaha that is funny.
How the hell didn't I notice that!

Do any of you doubt the power of our Evil Lord Xenu?

Xenophone is one of our many agents in this dimension...

- Xenu's Grey Beard

Given the fact that he took to the seas mainly to avoid being indicted for tax evasion and spying on the US government, that's not that surprising.

It's also kind of funny that Scientologists seem to be under the impression that Hubbard is some kind of SF god, when in reality he never was much good. His 80s material that he wrote after a long hiatus from creative writing is absolutely atrocious, and even during his creative peak during the 30s, he was a second stringer in the NY sci-fi community. He apparently wrote a handful of decent stories, but those were far outweighed by the flood of mediocrity that characterized most of his output.

Yeah... very average for his era, although funnily enough his other material is quite a lot better than the cosmology of Scientology!
Imagine if Philip K Dick had decided to invent his own religion...

Here he is talking about "child scientology"...

And here he is talking about being a kid at their supposed drug rehab facility called "Narconon"...

Such a fucking shame.

The Four Corners $cientology episode was brilliant.
I watch watching it as it went to air.

Good luck, Will. I'm sure you'll find some organization that can put your energy and ethics to good use...or to the use of good.

Will, I just read your thread and it is VERY enlightening. There are many many bad things going on in the world right now. Us good hearted human being need to stick together.

Take care my friend.

Good luck on your travels Will and if you ever make your way down under
you'll have a friend to meet up with.

Good to see your still going strong Will. I do believe you guys are going to crack these SOB's pretty soon and it will all come tumbling down.

Good job man

Will- Im curious about something- with Senator Xenophon becoming a large critic publically of $cientology, in 2010- what is the ability of the church to strike at him with their OSA goons and "fair game" policy? Will they do anything? Or in this media saturated time, is doing the stuff that they have done in the past just going to back fire on them?

Thoughts?

I really don't know, man. Honestly... I'd never underestimate the Cult's ability to shoot themselves in the foot. So it is possible (however unlikely) that they could try some nuts-o crap they pulled with Paulette Cooper. Which would be awesome for the cause. It's like I tell people all the time when they ask me... "Aren't you worried about them trying to kill you or something??". I laugh and tell them that it would be great for their reputation in slowing down it's inevitable demise lol. And no, I don't think they're THAT stupid. Maybe 30 years ago, but not now.

If I were to speculate on it, I'd say by the time the Senate inquiry gets passed, they'd launch a huge smear campaign in Oz to tell everyone just how much Nick hates religion. Paid for in full by... uhhh... I dunno... How about "Australians for religious freedom". With some nonsense tagline like "Don't tell us how to pray, Senator Xenophon"... Not thinking ahead of the curve to the inevitable shoops that would ensue, simply by changing the spelling of "pray" to "prey". Then we all have a good laugh at their 100,000th failure this year.

Food for thought, anyhoo...

i love these little updates, shame the inquiry didnt float but the victory is in the increased exposure as always. tick tock...

will, does this mean you are shoving off to focus on a book soon?
