I'm guessing this degree of sacrifice was a sign there civilisation was in terminal decline due to the mentioned climatic problems. That was pretty common in the Americas I believe, small scale human sacrifice increasing massively as crisis hit before the religious elite were overthrown and the temples burnt.

Dunno about ''small scale'', it's estimated that the aztecs sacrificed from 1080 (they would sacrifice 60 people 18 times a year) to 20.000 people a year depending on the occasion (like if they built a new temple they would really go crazy with the human sacrifices).

Child and human sacrifices are still rampant - it's just not out in the open.

No point in writing a huge post as no one reads it, but I've done years of credible research into VIP/elite phile rings and believe me, ritual sacrifices still goes on. It's endemic. philia and satanism is the glue that holds the establishment together. People seem to roll their eyes at the satanism part, despite the overwhelming evidence. Even when it was revealed that Savile, with other masked men, abused a 12 year old in a satanic ritual at a hospital, people believe it's just an isolated incident.

Some years ago, I received a very detailed list (uk based) of satanic ritual abusers, many VIPs, and witnesses that were part of a satanic network. The list is extremely credible as many of the people named have since been charged, or at least there's been enough evidence to suggest they are guilty. There was a 14yr old who was made pregnant within the cult. Her baby was cut out without anaesthetic and was sacrificed. This is just a minute example of what goes on.
