Nah this issue has been ebbing and flowing for a lot longer than covid. An important thing to consider is the mps responsible for a the circus in parliament are generally seen as clowns and don't even have a significant support among their own people. I can't speak to immigration but I suspect many resent being replaced in what they see as their country although I'd bet Chinese and Indians are the biggest concern to them due to shear numbers

Australia and NZ have an agreement where citizens of one can freely move, live, work etc. in the other anyway. So a lot of NZ citizens and in fact a lot of Maoris live in Australia.

Women aren't supposed to do a haka by the way, the Maori as you would expect had/have several dances, and the women would do feminine ones.

It's more a bunch of benefits and preferential access to things like healthcare, some unversity courses, specific scholarships. There are nonsense 'cultural reports' in criminal sentencing which are just a way to reduce already pathetic sentences. Some specific welfare benefits as well. Eclusive access to some hunting and fishing. Gauranteed number of seats in parliament. That's some off the top of my head.

Then you get into the real scams that is the tribal authorities have billions of dollars of wealth from past settlements with the govt and are not subjected to tax on any income. All that tax free wealth while their people are overrepresented in poverty and crime statistics and the actual taxpayers are left to pick up the pieces and cost.
