How would Royce do today?

Royce would be a FW today, maybe a LW at best. And also, yeah he’d basically be Kron Gracie.

I respect him a lot but the sport has grown. I don’t buy that argument when we’re talking about someone from 15 years ago but 30? Yeah.
He was skinny at ww. Not much weight he could cut

Royce would get out-grappled by the worst grappler at flyweight.
<{MingNope}>

That branch of the Gracie family REFUSE to evolve their grappling. Their egos have them convinced that their "system" is already perfect and doesn't need to be changed.
Look how badly Matt Hughes out-grappled him, and that was 20 years ago. MMA grappling is so far ahead of what it was in 2005 and that was already way ahead of anything Royce ever was.

Royce is extremely lucky that Matt Hughes didn't feel like snapping his arm that day, because Matt absolutely could have given Royce another elbow

OG Gracie BJJ was developed to give a technical advantage to erase a size disparity. The problem for Royce would be that everyone in modern MMA is as skilled in BJJ but also has wrestling, Mauy Thai and grinds cardio.
Also the rules are vastly different today. Round-less fights in stagnant positions allowed him to stall/rest without worry that the fighters would be stood up.
Ronda is a good example of how the sport evolved in front of our eyes and how quickly you can be exposed being. one-dimensional.

He was good when BJJ was a novelty. Today even any UFC BW would crush him like an insect.

Even Royce's Jiu-Jitsu is dated. He has the grappling skills of a good competitor blue belt by todays standards. Even in grappling I think many of the striker guys would beat him today.

I don't even think Ronda fell off that hard. I think she just had some serious gameplanning issues against Holly and got cracked immediately against Amanda. She likely would have still been at the top of the division for a while.

Respectfully he would get out grappled by competitive blue to purple belts if it’s a no gi setting. The game really changed since the 90s.

I will give Royce his props though. He is physically frail but he isn’t afraid to pull hair or strike the groin.

I feel like even if she managed to squeak her way out of the Holly fight the aura was gone and her lack of hands was exposed.
It deserves to be mentioned that she also benefitted from her opponents low fight IQ as well. Bethe Correra was the only one that managed to get her to engage in striking and even then got hilariously ko'd.

Yeah. Her striking defense was atrociously underdeveloped. Offensively, she wasn't that much worse than Amanda. Doesn't matter much when you can't move your head at all.

Gracie was already asking for special rules, weight exceptions, and taking PEDs, when it was still the early-mid 2000s…

Even he knew that he wasn’t able to keep up with the fighters around him…

It's funny how this thread makes it sound like Royce loses to every single UFC fighter on the roster today yet he beat Sakuraba who is considered a sweetheart and one of the greatest fighters of more modern times. Says a lot about him. About both actually.

I don't think he'd be close to Kron tbh. Kron is a far better grappler than Royce was.

Tate did in their second fight. She even rocked Ronda in round 2. But yeah, low IQ still, she went for a takedown and got reversed everytime she started doing well on her feet.

Offense I wouldn't put her near Amanda's level. Punching power yes, brawling maybe, but she never kicked, and her timing and setups of her punches were nowhere near Amanda's, hence Holm looking like Mayweather in round 2 against her once she was confident and her Rondas timing down.

actually that's true. Tate seemed to make the fights into an outright scrap and basically tried everything.
While we're on it, the biggest letdown for me has to be Cat Zingano. I can't say for sure about her ability to sprawl and defend takedown attempts but her typical fight style of boxing and knees could have been the answer to Ronda, Once again a terrible fight plan kept that from happening in record time.
