How would an accurate lie detector change society?

Let's say someone invented a cheap, readily available, 100 percent accurate lie detector. Would it be good or bad for society?

What would be the drawbacks?

It'd be bad for society because it's a band-aid fix. It doesn't address the root of the problem. Deceptive behavior won't stop due to lie detectors, it will become darker, and more deeply rooted.

Obviously if we could eliminate malicious deception it would be a good thing. People would have to present themselves and their intentions as they are.

But what about little white lies? When the misses comes in and asks "do I look fat in this" should a light go on letting her know you're full of shit?

I'd probably have to start paying your mom back child support for you

I'LL go out on a limb and say society would be changed in a fundamental , drastic and probably negative way if you did away with all deception 100% . Like you touched on the white lies do a lot more to smooth things over and to make our relationships tolerable then we think. Every ones thoughts go ( even if only for a short time) to places that are better kept to themselves. Would you really want to know every time your wife wondered how her life would've been different marrying her college boyfriend instead of you or your parents loved your little brother more so than you? White lies or omissions are a hugely important social lubricant of sorts imo.

Lie detectors are very accurate in determining if you are lying and you're not a psychopath.

The issue with them is that they give false positives too. Say you are just worried about what the machine will say, then that will detect that as a lie.

Well if they give false positives then they're not 100% accurate. Plus it's an expensive machine that needs to be run by a professional.

I'm talking about like if someone invented an app for your phone or something that was actually able to detect lies with 100% accuracy.

I think the justice system would change drastically, and we'd probably save billions in taxes that are currently spent on lengthy trials. Lots of lawyers would have to find other work.

Relationships would suffer greatly in the beginning, as everyone adjusts to this new honest society, but then I think things would calm down once people get comfortable with everyone's honesty. Those who embrace this technology may even find better spouses, because they'll find someone who truly matches with them, rather than someone who just thinks they're hot.

Politics would change drastically, probably for the better. Although there are certain things that the public shouldn't know about so that could get ugly.

No change; people will find a way around it.

Being worried or nervous about your answer has no affect on a polygraph

I thought that it detected anomalies in your heart rate? So it's not really detecting the lie as much as it's detecting your brain thinking "Oh crap I hope they believe me"

And of course, being the neurotic that I am, I would probably think that about every answer I gave, true or not.

It would make the Olympics more enjoyable.

Politicians would be insta-fucked.

Weddings would be awesome

"Do you take her for better or worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health..."

"Yes, no, yes, no, yes, no"

That is a scary thought. Bride has been bangin the best man, comes out at wedding.

Bumping this thread after 11 years because AI might make this a reality in a couple years.

Polygraphs are ok, but not super accurate, but it's plausible that AI tools are created that can combine other techniques with heart rate and would give better results, and being AI it would become more accurate over time as it improves itself.

So in 2027 maybe we get something that's 5% more accurate than a polygraph, but by 2029 it may already be 70% more accurate than a polygraph.

Life would be like the movie "Liar Liar"

Which would be funny for a few min and then shit would get violent.
