How well does Conor do against top ten lightweights?

Didn't say that. I said he looks like he doesn't based on how clumsy his punches look. Contrast that to how he KOd Alvarez. Also, he fought Diaz and Cerrone at 170 and clearly had power. He obviously had great power at 145. So why are we pretending he flat out doesn't at 155? Are we skipping a division?

It's because in his fights against Nurmagomedov, Poirier 2 and 3, he doesn't seem to have pop to his punch, his punches look slow or tentative and he doesn't seem to throw with the same intensity and focus as he usually does. That's not the same thing as not having power. He's just not generating them the same way he did at 145 and 170.
 
I think he beats Tony and Dariush and that’s literally it.

Logically, we know McGregor is at a disadvantage against any good grappler that can get him to the ground (see Khabib). It also seems he struggles against top strikers, assuming they can maintain a solid gameplan (see Poirier).

Using these rather hazy criteria, I suppose I'd favour him against

  • Dos Anjos (good grappler but can't take McGregor down),
  • Ferguson (Ferguson likes to just bang, at the expense of a gameplan).
  • Chandler (because I just remember his as being kinda meh back in the day)
  • Oliveira (because -II-)
  • Islam (unproven)

I'd say I favour Gaethje over McGregor.

And then I don't know about the other guys on the list because I don't really know anything about them.

All in all, I don't think McGregor should be underestimated. But he has a giant target on his back, and I don't think he's all that difficult to figure out even at his best. So I doubt we'll see a resurgence for him, at any weight class.

Bro, Oliveira would more likely than not sub Conor with ease. Conor would be terrified to get in range. Charles is the best submission artist in all of LW and took down Chandler, who is a much better wrestler. He has a chance of landing a counter on Charles, but with Charles's recent form he would be a clear favorite vs Conor.

Favoring Conor over Islam is just... lol. Islam would easily be at least -200. It's the worst matchup for him in the entire UFC.

Gaethje
Islam
Tsarukyan

Conor not a favorite but has a solid chance:

Chandler
Gillespie (I don't get why people are favoring Conor vs Gill... it's a nightmare matchup for Conor).

Wait. You are saying he has knockout power at 170(both opponents were former 155lb fighters) but he couldn't knockout Diaz. His big claim was how his opponent was 3 times larger than him so he couldn't knock him out. You have a guy like cowboy on a losing streak with close to 10 KO losses in his career. So knocking cowboy out with him coming into your match with a recent KO loss less than 4 months ago means you have knockout power at 155? Go look at his career; look for how many clean knockouts he had in his career and what division it is in.

I would even argue Mcgregor has no real experience at 155 lbs in the UFC either.

I'm glad you mention that they are actual 155ers, but they were fought at 170 so I excluded those. But let's include them. HE CLEARLY demonstrated his usual striking skills and power. He demonstrated his agility and energy in Diaz, Diaz 2, Alvarez, Cerrone.

Also, nobody knocks out Diaz so it's not unusual, though it's worth noting that Diaz says McGregor hits very hard; he was knocked down three times and ate some of the hardest shots we've ever seen Diaz recoil from.

That's a good point, but do you at least acknowledge McGregor was in top condition and landing hard, accurate punches like he was doing pre-2017? Cause he was. We did not see this version against Khabib or Poirier 2.

He doesn't have much experience, but the talking point that he has no KO power at 155 is very clearly false from what we've seen against Alvarez, Diaz 1 and 2.

I stand by saying that we can clearly see McGregor behaving very sluggishly in every fight (except against Cowboy) since the end of 2016. Because he fought like once a year, Duh.

Exactly. Number 1, his aura of being anything special is long gone. As long as the opponent has any kind of self control, and brain at all. The mental warfare simply wouldn’t work.

Didn’t work on Khabib or Poirier. And I think some guys would actually blast him in any pressers. Bring up all the shit he’s pulled while losing all his lightweight fights since 205, and just forget it.

I don’t know who he’d beat or not. But, only his huggers would make him a clear favourite against most of them. The top 5 wipe him out. The rest have the chance to beat him.
 
2015 McGregor would do well imo, even with his poor gas tank and lack of heart. I think it'd be reasonable to see him as the favorite in more than half of those fights.

But today, I'm not sure the guy really trains, and whatever heart he once had for fighting is long gone. The McGregor era is long since over.
 
The pattern is roughly the same: Conor probably has to get the KO-TKO in the first 2 rounds... which he might be capable to do in a couple of cases, still, these are top LW's... and Conor still have to prove himself in this division.

And there are a couple of matchups, that are very hard to win for Conor (Poirier, Makhachev, Oliveira, Dariush etc.)

My estimation would be he wins roughly 2 out of 10... best guess would be a washed-up Tony or Hooker... I think he would be the slight underdog even against wrestlers like Chandler and Gillespie, judged by the first round of the Mendes fight and how easily Poirier took him down recently.
