How to use Athletic Tape

Ankle/Thumb/Knee/Shoulder

Fingers/Toes
Smaller joints like toes & fingers you can tape together (buddy taping) but generally you wouldnt have to splint inbetween as yous till need to bend the joint. I tape my fingers EXACTLY like the image below except I tape them like the Vulcan "Live Long & Prosper" greeting (the outside pairs of fingers)

You can also tape over the tip of the finger also to protect a sore nail or small joint.

Big Toes
The big toe takes a bit more taping like below, although you can also run the tape right over the tip of the toe if you want. You can also do this for the smaller toes but without wrapping around the individual toes.

Good heavens!!!! I started to type out a response, but then gave up. It's pretty damn tedious to try and type instructions for something as mundane as how to tape up your fingers and toes.

Nice post!

I busted my big left toe at a submission wrestling tournament and have used the buddy tape and big toe taping together, to practice and compete. Its not 100% but such is our world.

finally my faith in the grappling forum is restored.

dapunisher - beautifully said. thank you.
bama zulu - so...yeah...preventing sprains and overextensions sounds good for the cost of some measley tape and a few minutes of preparation.

judogido - ah one of the good grappling posters i was referring to. many thanks for your insight.

any particular reason the vulcan grip is better than the one shown? i guess to protect all your fingers i'd assume?

johil d'o - mundane? yes? useful? yes? searched before posting? yes. so it has every reason to be here. now if we could just delete all the posts from the first to judogido's we'd have something worth archiving.

My faith has also been restored.

There is such useful information out there for us to tap into with the internet and especially sherdog. I use the search function all the time. Some threads have been discussed but for what ever reason does not show up when searched for. Therefore people create a new thread. I just wanted to say I really liked the thread and the helpful posts.

As for the others, ugh, what can you do, people will just hit the thread to post mundane things or bash you, when others find the questions and the answers helpful. I am still using the search function to check for this French girl Alize'e(?) full dancing video and can't find it no matter how hard I search.

Maybe you two should grab a hotel room.

No worries, mate.

I tape my fingers like this because it seems to work for me by protecting all fingers while still allowing the dexterity needed for proper gripping. Plus the 3 "middle" fingers are the ones I have the most trouble with so I pretty much have to tape this way.

When I had an ankle injury I asked the physio whether as a "preventative" measure I should get some ankle supports and just wear them all the time.

He suggested that you should only tape when injured - not tape a perfectly good bodypart because it "might" prevent injury (I think he was referring more to ankles/knees etc than fingers). Otherwise you are actually "weakening" it by making it rely on strapping/taping all the time.

So use some discretion & dont just tape if you dont need to (although IMHO fingers &, for boxing, wrists are exceptions I always tape/wrap those)

har har. how much thought did it take to come up with that one, oh thought warrior. :)

Let's see. I worked on that little witticism for a few hours. Polished it, refined it, redrafted it some more, then edited it for maybe an hour to get it just right. I wanted to really hit that one out of the park.

well it burrowed like an arrow deep into mine ownst heart. what a cad to have wounded me as such!

My apologies, compadre. My rapier wit is a tad too sharp and pointed! Walk it off, you'll feel better.

Grappling tape is asinine. If you're not injured, leave it alone. This isn't Naruto.

<tries to figure out the conenction between taped fingers for grappling and naruto.......>

i give up.
