How special was Mirko Cro Cop?

his Fedro fight still holds up, strong IMO. a lot of that has to do with the ring of course but damn, like I always get caught up into it before I even know it.

goosebumps man. that was a special time of mma.

the journey that led to this fight, I think is the only time I've ever seen Fedro pissed. it was right after Mirko wrecked Aleks. there's foortage of Fedro's reaction from the locker room. & then you see how aggressive he was in their fight thereafter..

man, I used to love staying up late into the night watching these fights live via sopcast, waking up my girl behind me with every audible reaction I'd have, where she'd join on into watching the events with me too. haha that's what they were... major events. Pride always made every one of their events feel like something spectacular & major was happening. history was being made & it has.

I dont think Fedor stayed that angry though. Of course he was angry to see his brother lose, but he then reverted back to his usual calm self. It was Mirko that seemed uncomfortable around him, while Fedor always had that "I've already won" look on his face.

It certainly raised the stakes to the fans and made the marketing for the fight way better though, that footage.

ohh the sopcast days!

Two of the most overrated ever, not even top 10 all time.

I did. I also saw him brutally lose to JDS, Mir, Nelson and Schaub

Funny you bring up JDS, since that fight has always been rather telling regarding Cro Cop's skill even older and past his prime. Here's a young fighter in JDS entering his prime at 25, who an older, slower, injury-riddled 35-year-old version of Cro Cop was able to be competitive against for three rounds until he took a punch directly into the eyeball. Even in losing, he landed a bunch of straight left hands and right low kicks and swelled up and bloodied up both of JDS' eyes. A past his prime Cro Cop gave JDS all he could handle. A prime Cro Cop would've chewed JDS up.

Haha, what a blast from the past :D

You need to consider Mirko's mileage and also the fact he is undersized for HW, in order to fairly asses CroCop
It doesnt seem you have any intention of it though

For every significant strike Mirko landed, Junior landed more than 3. Above 3 to 1 sig. strikes differential.
In the 3rd round, it was above 4-1
Mirko landed 22 sig. strikes in 12 minuts of fighting. JDS landed 70 and also had more control time.

That's not giving your opponent "all he could handle". Have a bit of respect for yourself.

There are some hyporcrite, obscenely biased sherbros - and even "senior moderators" which is fucking sad - who are willing to false the reality under the most blatant hyperboles and distortions.
Collecting pats in the back by fellow biased sherbros.

I think Cro Cop looked decent i. 1st, then it was all JDS, but Cro Cop's chin was good there

You should rewatch that fight. The second is actually Cro Cop's best round. In the first round, JDS comes out strong and he lands one or two solid shots, but he also eats one or two shots from Cro Cop, and by the second round, he seemed a bit confused by the fact that Cro Cop was still there. (Remember, this was still so early in JDS' career that Cro Cop was the first opponent to make him go past the first round.) Because of this, he was sort of stuck in neutral and that allowed Cro Cop more offensive freedom. (On Cro Cop's side, remember that this is the period when Cro Cop lost his trigger finger and almost religiously refused to engage with people, just circling around and every once in a while throwing a LHK. Against JDS, he at least threw his left hand a bit.) Then, in the third round, JDS basically decided to just unload until Cro Cop went down, and in the course of swarming him, he rocked him with that huge knee and then in the clinch popped him with that fight-finishing eyeball punch.

It's a fascinating fight to consider, JDS early in his prime run but still coming into his own and gaining confidence and experience and Cro Cop early in his slide from his best but still being dangerous with his punches and kicks. To imagine OWGP Cro Cop against HW champ JDS, I'd pick Cro Cop, but that's the type of fight that good old JR would've called a slobberknocker :D

Mirko Cro Cop was the greatest light heavyweight of all time. There I said it. He murders everyone in that era that fought at light heavyweight. The question becomes about Jon Jones. Cro Cop was built different, he could hurt you from different places. His takedown defense and ability to get up were amazing, his power and athleticism and speed were something to behold (watch vs barnett, nogueira, etc). Everything Jon does well, Cro Cop likely hits him back with harder. Example being Jon's iconic jkd knee stomps, cro cop's leg kicks (calf or thigh) likely hurt Jon's twigs badly. Cro Crop has no fear of being knocked out in a fight like this. Anyone who wonders if Cro cop could make the weight uncompromised, you're dumb for even questioning it. he was 210 against wanderlei, 225-ish at peak if you could call it that. 8 lbs of shit weight, 8% water weight cut. Doesn't even break a sweat. And thankfully Jon did steroids. So that takes it off the table to question if we should allow cro cop the leniency he likely received in pride, when he was most agressive.

The short version is tldr; cro cop murders jon jones. If jon is the goat of lhw and special, cro cop is clearly special

He casually kicked heads off like he was clearing a table after breakfast with his foot.

He would be a force at LHW but he was never as light as 210lbs
