How often do you guys wash your gi's (BJJ)?

I once rolled with a guy who's gi must not have been washed for at least 2 weeks. It was yellowing and DAMP. It smelled terrible, I was gagging when I was rolling. I told him that I felt puking, and he took it as that it was from exhaustion.

That must have been his "Competition" gi.

Dude if you sweat so much that your belt is soaking wet after every training session you need to seriously consider a lifestyle change.

If you want to wash your belt go right on ahead I don't think the BJJ commissioner will fine you for it, nor do I believe Rickson will show up at your door and armbar you. I just don't do it, and I don't have much respect for people who wash their belt to make it look aged and faded.

In summary I guess it's just personal opinion and gym tradition.

It's not necessarily just the sweat, but also the dust and stuff on the mats that make me want to wash the belt...

i wash my belt and haven't noticed anything bad only good smell as opposed to bad.

I onced had an instructor who told me never to wash my belt and that shit stank. now i wash it after every practice. as a matter of fact i think everybody i know washes the belt if they train constantly

You should be washing your gi after every practice. I've heard different people say different things about washing belts, but it should be a given that you wash your gi after every wear.


If you don't have a dryer or something, then it could be time to invest in a second gi. Would be worth the money.

Maybe someone here can answer this question for me. I have a gameness gi size A4 and it has shrunk considerably since I first bought it. Ill occasionally dry it in the dryer. Is this a gi issue or a gameness issue? BTW I wash my gi after every practice and my belt only if it gets stained.

Its a single, size A4. Im 6'1 and about 210

If fit really good. The sleeves came right down to the hands but now they are a good 3 to 4 inches above the wrist. The pants also fit right down to the foot but are a good 4 inches above the ankle.

If shrinking is an issue, I would recommend not putting it in the dryer.


I had the same issue, and bought a second gi so that I could rotate them out without having to wait one one to air-dry.
