How often do you guys wash your gi's (BJJ)?

'After every class' is the only acceptable answer, if your gi doesn't need to be washed after one class, stop wasting your money on training.

what the f__k planet do you live on where germs and bacteria don't grow on sweaty cotton like substances in the shape of a belt.

seriously.

sorry, i'm pretty new to this. Just that the store i bought the gear from told me not to wash the belt (fightplanet, in hamilton canada, someone here recommended it)

I would assume it needs to be washed but, i thought that guy knew what he was talking about

Foz, you were joking right? Right?

I never wash my belt. Never have, never will. I might spray it with a light mist of household antibacterial spray but thats it. As for my gi, I was it after every practice. I try not to even let the sweat dry at all but thats a bit hard since I live so far from the gym.
Every now and then I will put my gi in the washer, let it fill up, and pour some baking soda in and let it sit for 30 mins.

so.. i take it the belt washing thing is more of a preference thing, or ..at least not as mandatory as washing the gi

yea besides your belt will start tearing up after a few washes.

besides.. your belt goes OVER you gi.. unlike your gi there is no skin contact with your belt.

bpm30, Ask any respectable BJJ practitioner and they will tell you never to wash your belt.
I have heard of guys doing it but it's considered taboo at the gym I train in.
Again don't take my word for it. Ask someone you respect in the sport and I'm sure they'll steer you in the right direction.

OK, can someone give me a reason why people don't wash their belts? I have seen a lot of common sense reasons to wash it but not one as to why not.

i wash my belt along with my gi after every class, that thing can get filthy too

Make sure when you ask them that you stand upwind.

I wash my belt whenever i remember, there's nothing wrong with it. There's a superstition that washing your belt washes away your knowledge. Somehow, I keep tempting fate...

oh yea, and i wash my gi after every practice. I think sweat build up does worse things to a gi than constant washing.

Dude if you sweat so much that your belt is soaking wet after every training session you need to seriously consider a lifestyle change.

If you want to wash your belt go right on ahead I don't think the BJJ commissioner will fine you for it, nor do I believe Rickson will show up at your door and armbar you. I just don't do it, and I don't have much respect for people who wash their belt to make it look aged and faded.

In summary I guess it's just personal opinion and gym tradition.

It was a joke, son!!!

After 2 sessions. But that's only cos I have 2 gis and do my washing every like 3 days. And each session is usually within 12-24 hrs of each other.

I heard that washing the belt also has some serious shrinking consequences

I once rolled with a guy who's gi must not have been washed for at least 2 weeks. It was yellowing and DAMP. It smelled terrible, I was gagging when I was rolling. I told him that I felt puking, and he took it as that it was from exhaustion.

I will laugh when all these 'respectable' people get staph. good job.
