I bought a 2009 refurb Macbook Pro maybe 5/6 years ago and I've just bought another refurb 2017 MBP, both only around $600. The other one didn't break, it just became a bit slow so I'll take it to our local thrift store, they might get $50 for it.

This new one's a dream in comparison, the bar with predictive text is a luxury and fingerprint login in comparison but the trackpad is gigantic so that's going to take a bit to get used to.

Apart from dropping liquid on Toshiba and Dell they had a rough ride in comparison of the longevity of Apple. I still have one from about 2004 which still powers up. And don't get me started on the shitshow that is Lenovo.

Lenovo Thinkpads are actually very highly regarded among programmers. I don’t think Lenovo is a shitshow at all, rather, the opposite is true. I’ve had a Dell Inspiron for about 9 years, and it works well. I find it's pretty good for a general use consumer laptop. I’d like some extra RAM and hard drive space and something more hardcore just to fuck around, but I can’t really justify it. Both of these are good brands. Of course Apple is good, as well.

I’ve had a Dell Inspiron for about 9 years, and it works well still, despite heavy use. The Inspiron line is also pretty highly regarded. When IBM sold off Thinkpad to Lenovo it all went to crap. I was in the industry at the time.

It really didn't lol. You mean 20 years ago? Thinkpads are still popular, in particular some of the slightly older models are extremely popular among programmers, much more recently than when they stopped being IBM branded. And modern ones are still well regarded in general. Calling them out uniquely as crap compared to any other generic computer company is just not accurate.

Every year or 2, don't have a desktop and I subject them to a lot of wear and tear with travel etc.

I bought one in 2013 and I still have it, but I definitely need a new one

I have a dell XPS15... no idea how old it is, at least 5-6 years and it works fine.

I don't travel for work anymore so no need to upgrade as I barely use it.

As long as possible, my last one had water damage
(My fault for always leaving my cup of drink on it)

The Lenovo I currently have is about 5 years, hope I get a few more out of it

The worst part about buying a new laptop is the new stickers I need to buy to redecorate it.
I <3 my stickers, can't go without them, but it means I have to spend a few dollars on Redbubble stuff again and again

Generally as needed since I cycle through multiple laptops and desktops depending on the week. Gaming laptop is obviously the most frequently charged, my Macboook Air and work laptop are both newer ARM designs so maybe once or twice a week.

They've corrected pretty well in the last several years. A lot of their business staff is either Intel or IBM at this point. They still lead the pack for enterprise.

Out of curiosity, why a Pro instead of Air?

Why do programmers like them? It's usually people who like the nub, but that's gone now.

What are you doing to your poor laptops lol

I need something at least 15” and what I’ve bought over 20 years have been MBPs and they’ve been a diamond.

Even my Lenovo account manager apologized to me about how crap their laptops were after IBM offloaded them

I don't use laptops anymore. The last one I had was great. It was an expensive MSI I bought to play games. Figured out I don't play games often enough to keep it. I gave it to my nephew.

I have the old desktop computer my dad had when he died. If you're not gamer, a ton of RAM will make a computer useful for a long time. I use my computer to surf the net, write and do some Photoshop. My dad's computer is old af, but does the job.
