How NOT to spar Singdam Kiatmoo9

Since it seems to be a great big mystery to some.
Yes the helmet guy throws spinning kicks. so what?
Yes he is clearly frustrated over not being able to hit. As have been pointed out this is not unusual in a beginner.
Yes if the pro fighter had knocked the beginner out it would have been worse -borderline criminal. But fact is that this was hardly a even fight, at best it was a teaching sparring. and going around humiliating (soccer kicking him on the ass while he has his back turned and then running to the camera laughting just to take one example) the beginner is very very poor behavior from a instructor. And if he was not there as a instructor why the heck was a champion level guy fighting a beginner level (most likely paying) student?.

What is disrespectful is for a foreigner to come into a gym and be able to pay $$ to spar champions and expect to not get their ass kicked. This guys is a f'ing fighter not some puffed up Karate sensei. You want to pay $$ to go and spar Thai champions you gotta be humble or GTFO.

I didnt see anything wrong with this at all- its completely normal and its obvious you don't understand whats going on in the vid- and thats ok because you prob don't train MT and you havent been to a Thai gym.

I can bet you they already told this guy to relax alot of times. Helmet guy was trying to land heavy shots while singdam was going super easy.

So what is Singdam supposed to do if he doesnt listen? Give him a beating? No. Let him get away with his shitty behaviour? No.

He needs to learn the that way of sparring which is supposed to be light and fun. If helmet guy was a friend he would probably still kick his ass from behind. They act silly like that ALL the time in thai gyms. Singdam and Saenchai probably fool around like that. Its part of culture.

Ive sparred one high level muay thai guys in a euro gym that took out his agression on me and left me limping. Now that is too much but that guy wasnt training me, he was preparing for his own fight. It didnt affect me but for a guy like helmet guy it would just make him gun shy.

If he get treated like in the video when he loses his temper he might actually learn to keep his cool and maybe even to have fun while sparring

I can assure you that they would not give a flying fk if this dude was throwing full power shots. Its hard to comprehend the level these guys are on until you spar / fight them.

A lesson in humility for me was when I could handle sparring anyone in my home gym and then I sparred a 19yr old Thai with 100+ fights that weighed 5kg less than me - he made me feel like a 7yr child trying to land punches on daddy. Actually I didnt feel humiliated I felt in awe of this kid. And he wasn't anywhere near the standard of a Thai champion.

I have sparred multiple lumpinee champions in thailand and some other fighters in europe so i would say i understand it to some extent.

Of course they dont worry of him landing hard shots because he won't. But i would assume its annoying when a farang comes to thailand and spars the wrong way. Ive seen it many times and some are worse than helmet guy. Its a disrespect to their culture

How do you think helmet boy would fair in a inner city boxing gym? I know exactly what would happen to him.

What's your point?

The thai fighter was mocking and belittling the white guy. It's not the end of the world. Personally if I feel someone is going too hard I'll tell them, but most of the time you let them know with some hard shots to the body. I don't think I would humiliate a dude, I feel it's better to just put them in their place physically, barring KO punches of course.

Edit: Actually watching it again, it's not that bad. He was going kind of easy on him, could have put him in a lot of hurt.

I don't really see what the big deal is, he looked like he was having fun in there, when the guy in the head guard did a silly spinning back fist or when he caught him early on with a spinning hook kick he didn't loose his cool, he carried on going light and playful.

I think the laughing and kicking him up the ass was nothing disrespectful, I think the head guard guy probably thought it was funny.

The head guard guy on the whole wasn't going particularly uncontrolled, he just looked a lot more tense.

It just looked to me that the guy in the head guard was someone with a little karate or TKD experience was trying a little to hard to impress Singdam while sparring by throwing some axe kicks and spinning kicks and then he found out he wasn't as good as he thought he was...no biggy, what a great experience for the head guard guy tho. And what a nice guy Singdam must be to keep his cool and not let ego get involved when someone is getting a little reckless.

But from the sound of the tittle of the thread I thought something serious was going to happen...bit of a anti climax.

TS, have you trained with the guy in the head guard since? Has he come back to try and improve or has he ego got the better of him? He might be a alright guy that has been there training for a month?

You see people try and impress instructors all the time by going hard and trying fancy techniques

Eh, I don't see why Singdam would have lost his cool either, or how the head guard dude was "reckless." He had bad technique and threw his spinning shit with no power. Why would Singdam lose his cool over easily dodged/blocked attacks?

another kk vs mt thread

but this time about sparring culture

There's a clip on Instagram where Saenchai and Singdam are taking turns throwing kicks to the same pad holder and Saenchai kicks Singdam's legs out from under him while he's kicking then runs around with his arms up.

So ya, these guys do that all the time it seems. And every Thai trainer I've had has swept me (or tried) while holding pads for me. All part of the gig.

Edit - Here's the vid:

Man i need to start training MT again. The idea that you can get great accommodation with world class instruction in places like Thailand for dirt cheap just seems silly to pass on.

Looks like a good fun spar. I don't speak Thai, so no idea what they are saying - if they were mocking the guy, then that's not good. But they looked like they were having a bit of a laugh. I actually thought the guys's spinning kicks were pretty good (albeit never in danger of landing) - could do with spending some time focussing on his leg kicks instead of the spinny stuff though!

Hahaha goddamn I miss Bangkok. Yeah this whole thing is very much just Thai culture and playful sparring. Stop trying to impose your values/perceptions on another culture, they just do things a little different there. Thai's in general are pretty playful people, but MT gyms are even more so. The laughing and playing helps to keep sparring light and fun, but some of the displays of dominance you see are bred into the gym culture because of how fights are scored (dominance/showmanship will help tilt the odds in your favor and more importantly it gets the gamblers going which in turn generates money for the fighters). It isn't personal, just part of the game.

I would of taken the kids leg off after the first spinning heel kick he threw to the head. The "eat a head kick then sweep the leg" wouldn't of won him any points in my book either.

Are you implying there was something bad about him throwing spinning heel kicks to the head?

It's certainly not something done typically in light Muay Thai sparring, especially when throwing everything into it which is what that guy seemingly was doing. If it was me sparring after one of those i'd personally start throwing hard back at him and consider it a dick move. Then again, different sparring cultures between Muay Thai and Karate/TKD.
