My Pe teacher once told me the older bars were 40lbs becouse they used to factor in the weight of those heavy metal clips.
Most bars, however, are 45lbs in the present. I even took a bar to the scale one time to make sure, was a fun experiment.

Anyone know the cheapest place to get them in the UK?
I was just looking at this website; http://www.yorkfitness.com/Olympic-cat-512/Index.html ... check out the barbell sets at the bottom of the page. Strangely, the total weight of the plates in each set comes to 115kg and 105kg respectively... yet they are both supposed to be 140kg olympic sets. Wtf? If an Olympic bar is supposed to weigh 20kg, then something is up.
