How has the timeline of "who is your favorite fighter" changed over the years?

Conor McGregor, he was OK when he was broke, now he’s rich which makes me a huge fan!

That’s how Conor fans function.

My answer though is Fedor, nothing’s change, GOAT forever.

Phases or periods in time of fighters I really liked and then it turned into just liking fights. I'll still check out a fighters resume but I don't do fan boy shit anymore or Goat talk.

Royce, Don frye, Fred Ettish
Pedro Rizzo, Belfort, Randy Coture
Saku, Shogun, Fedor, Henderson, Big Nog
Frankie Edgar, Jose Aldo, Bj penn, Jon Jones
D.c., Josh Barnett.
I don't like half of these guys anymore for obvious reasons.

Anderson Silva, Urijah Faber, Maybe Bendo back in the day….I don’t really have “favorite” fighters anymore.

Maybe the Leech is my favorite fighter right now? It’s not like it was when I really started getting into mma.

Leech is a very exciting fighter, definitely one of my favourite to watch in the UFC at the moment, great pick.

Hell. It really hasn't changed since Enson fought Igor. Enson Inoue will forever be my favorite fighter of all-time. Fedor is my GOAT, Enson is my favorite. Before him it was probably Vitor or someone.

My favorites stay my favorites unless they do something really heinous outside the ring.

Or just really blatantly cheat. Was a fan of Vitor until the TRT era, but that really turned me off him.

2006 to about 2017 I'd say it was Shogun.
2017 to early 2022 I would say Oliveira took over, I'd loved the kid since his debut and Shogun wasn't really the same Shogun anymore.
Mid 2022 it became Shara Bullet.

2005-2010 - Fedor
2011 -2020 - Jones, Tony, Rumble
2018-2022 - Sterling, Ngannou, Colby

Mirko Cro-Cop from 2002 - until retirement. I started following him in K-1, so when he transferred to MMA, i got into MMA as well.

Volk since then.

But as I've got older I don't exactly have fav fighters I'm more of a fan of fights that anything.
I can relate, it started with other sports like football : I came to appreciate games where I'm a neutral watcher more. Passion can get you so much involved... it's just nice to appreciate a game without being on the verge of cardiac arrest, you also analyze the game better.
Same goes for MMA, I do have fighters I like and support, but I like good fights before all. I usually loosely chose to "root for" one of the fighters, depending on a lot of arbitrary factors, but not in an emotionally invested way, more like a "betting with myself" (like Billy Idol) way ; it just adds to the pleasure of the fight. For example, like many, I may root for the underdog, etc ; generally speaking, I tend to like smart, dedicated, versatile fighters. I like violence and finishes. Judges aren't my friends.
Outside of the octagon, I prefer authenticity to showmanship ; but even if that doesn't matter nearly as much as what happens in the cage, one of my biggest fear for MMA is that it would become more and more WWE style entertainment, with fake storylines and such. Some could argue it's already being pushed in that direction.

We frenchies are very chauvinistic, so I will blindly root for our fighters, but there are few of them ; maybe it's better this way.

Sorry, I didn't really answer the question.
