But as I've got older I don't exactly have fav fighters I'm more of a fan of fights that anything.
I can relate, it started with other sports like football : I came to appreciate games where I'm a neutral watcher more. Passion can get you so much involved... it's just nice to appreciate a game without being on the verge of cardiac arrest, you also analyze the game better.
Same goes for MMA, I do have fighters I like and support, but I like good fights before all. I usually loosely chose to "root for" one of the fighters, depending on a lot of arbitrary factors, but not in an emotionally invested way, more like a "betting with myself" (like Billy Idol) way ; it just adds to the pleasure of the fight. For example, like many, I may root for the underdog, etc ; generally speaking, I tend to like smart, dedicated, versatile fighters. I like violence and finishes. Judges aren't my friends.
Outside of the octagon, I prefer authenticity to showmanship ; but even if that doesn't matter nearly as much as what happens in the cage, one of my biggest fear for MMA is that it would become more and more WWE style entertainment, with fake storylines and such. Some could argue it's already being pushed in that direction.
We frenchies are very chauvinistic, so I will blindly root for our fighters, but there are few of them ; maybe it's better this way.
Sorry, I didn't really answer the question.
