Wrestling for MMA: Split Step Takedown Entries

I made a video on one of the most effective takedown entries for MMA. This is a favorite of Khabib and co, as it lets them quickly change levels from far away without telegraphing the shot or compromising their positioning.

It's crazy some of the TD's they got from far away. Esp Khabib against Justin and Dustin

I’ve been with sensei practicing my split step counters

Why we gotta give fancy names to everything? In the old days we just called this "bum rush". These guys aren't carefully splitting their steps, they are just charging.

It really is super underappreciated by MMA fans how hard it is to get a quality shot in contextually in an MMA fight, particularly at heavier weights.

Does this entry require speed to hit
No, it cheats a lot of the motion of a standard penetration step and since you're mostly just dropping your level it's fast even without an explosive drive. If you're doing it from long range, you need good chain wrestling to make it work consistently since you won't hit their hips hard. If you're doing it in close it takes good timing more than anything.

Nice. I’m gonna play with it and see how it works for me. I have a hard time shooting off my knees without shoes on due to my lack of speed and length. Hopefully it works out for me.

I also love how it’s the same move as covering distance with an overhand. Kind of like how Topuria and Garbrandt do it. As someone who uses a more narrow stance, I really like how it puts you in an athletic position quickly.

If you have 5-10 mins, please give the video I posted a watch.
GSP still has a higher TD accuracy % than both Khabib and Islam, it is a bum rush but it's a very calculated bum rush.
The posture of your chin/upper body on the entry almost needs to be "incorrect" in the pure wrestling sense if you want to hit takedowns at will in MMA

I used it today in training. Worked really good at getting a fast entry.

I never hit takedowns in jiujitsu without being close enough to hand fight to set it up. This one I just shot from open space and got in clean on a single. Good shit. Now I’m considering subscribing to your website
