Yeah. I think he was both hurt and surprised by the elbows, he probably hasn’t had much experience with things going poorly in top position and he froze/panicked. He thought he was moving out of elbow range and didn’t consider that he was moving into power punching range, because who the Fuck KOs people from the bottom?

The fact that Holland was so calm and unfazed with Jacare on top speaks volumes to his mental game.

Where most guys would panic he was talking and looking for a finish.

I think Holland is the GOAT but honestly I tend to chalk that in-fight talking up to weakness if anything from the talker. To me it’s usually an attempt to weaponize your mouth when you fear your primary bodily weapons are being compromised (there are exceptions: Khabib vs Conor foremost)

But typically when you see someone talking it’s when they’re in a bad or frustrating situation. Or a Diaz bro who just incorporates it into their war of attrition style from the jump

I take it case by case. His in cage persona seems to match his out of cage persona. the man is kicking ass and having fun.


The truer test will be what happens when he faces adversity, again. As I recall he was pretty calm and jovial in his fight with Thiago Santos, so I think that is just the way the guy is as opposed to a way to seem macho or tough.
