LATE PHASES (revisited) 8/10

I saw this 2 years ago on the "horror gems you didnt see in 2014," and i remembered thinking it was...ok.

Its October again and i did like the setup, so i had to watch it once moee. Glad I did.

A blind army vet is put into a retirement with his seeing eye dog. He quickly comes up with the idea that this community has a werewolf. He then quickly learns his new environment, trains, and acquires silver bullets. Him being blind means his other senses are heightened, but he does a clever trick at the end witg his hearing to gain an edge. Not sure if it would work, but it should.

The actor is phenomenal. I looked him up to see if he really is blind, thats how well he does. Hes got a new England, grumpy attitude, but he never comes out with anyone saying he believes a werewolf is present. He keeps it all within and it makes the neighbors uneasy.

Some of the other characters are fucking stupid...as in not intelligent. The cops think these attacks are caused by animals from the woods, despite fucking walls and doors being torn down. Whatever, thats not the worst part.

The worst part, and its going to be confusing because of my score, but..its the werewolf. Who the fuck thought this god damn thing looked good? Its awful. Now, its practical effects, but god damn, play some camera tricks to hide some of its awfulness. Its a guy in a suit. And it looks like a suit. Its dreadful.

We see a transformation and I spotted limited cgi, but its dominantly all practical. Its actually a bit different than what were used to, making it refreshing, its a pity they turn into such a shit looking monster.

Despite the comical wolf, the movie plays seriously, has a good score, and the kills/gore is great. I am not sure why i didnt praise it so much before, perhaps cuz its not scary, but its highly entertaining.

Felt like watching a horror movie and picked this one based on your review.

I thought it was a pretty good horror movie. Not scary, but entertaining indeed. The guy who played Ambrose was fantastic. His performance is the best part of the movie IMO.

2 things that bother me are the stupid cops and the stupid werewolf. The cops were beyond retarded and the werewolf looks like some costume from a Halloween store. Not sure why they thought it was a good idea to not put any effort in their werewolf when it's a movie about werewolves.

I'd give it a 6.5 out of 10.

Saw it awhile ago but i'd give Late Phases a solid 7/10. I really enjoyed, definitely a great indie horror worth a watch.

About to give The Transfiguration a go. Keep the October horror kick going.

Pretty much my exact thoughts but I cant give it that high a score. Everything about this movie is great. The script, the characters, the idea, the story. Except for the actual goddamn werewolf. Holy fuck. Like, not only is it bad, but they show it in as bright of light as possible. It was crap and they made zero effort to hide it.

Yeah, 2 images i remember were cringy. 1, when the wolf jumps on the car. 2, when he sets up the trap and they all gather.

We Are Still Here 5/10

Netflix has got SHIT for horror on there, let me tell you. So, I decided to see if I was wrong with this one.
Nope.

Premise? House is haunted by the previous tenants and a couple moves in there after their son has died, so, naturally, they believe its their son running around.

Worst part First. The acting is abysmal. Oh lord, I dont know who is actually decent in this! Perhaps the burned up spirits? Yeah, that works, cuz they look great.

Now, the best part(s) and its my entire score. The gore. As bad as the acting is in this, the gore is on the other end of the spectrum. Its absolutely delightful. Plus, no CGI from what I could tell. They did not spare any expensive on the make up artists and the special effects department.

But my god. Right after I saw a head exploding, I looked at our main actors for a response....and it was comical. See? Here thats ok.

Its barely watchable, but if you enjoy practical effects, thats the only way Id recommend.

Man, god dammit, I wanted to like this movie more, cuz it tries so vehemently to be awesome.

Ill tell ya this, THIS and Hellraiser, are neck to neck. This movie;s problem is that the story is awful. What is it about? Well, I can try to explain..

People are...plagued? Cursed? Touched? ...by a malevolent force. When they are under this 'ailment' they lose their minds, they cut the flesh off, they kill others, they come back to life, they morph into things, etc. Its all over the place!

The beginning had me hooked and it is what made me think of The Thing. A woman is shot then quickly burned up. I was thinking she was about to change into something horrible. Well, that happens later with someone else and its not explained. Yeah, another woman goes nuts, is killed, then turns into something out of The Thing, just as I had hoped. But, mother of god, give me somewhat of a reason as to why they look like this. The Thing was from another world. This, is from another dimension or hell, shit, fill in the blank. None of it makes sense. Oh, there are mobs of people in white cloaks with black triangles on their hoods, making sure the evil doing is done. They look good.

However, I sortve dont care. The acting here is much better than the other shit show I watched and the gore is through the roof. Seriously, these guys did not hold back and everyone is at stake. Again, I didnt see ANY CGI. This is a movie that is taken seriously and nicely directed. Its got great effects to boot and a scarier atmosphere. I love long shots of a simple setting coupled with a slight zoom. It Comes At Night made use of that in their trailers that had me intrigued, but I heard about how awful that was, so I didnt watch.

We Are Still Here isnt as good, but it did have a story I understood, even if it was tired to the point it was stupid. All this movie needed was motive. There is, per say, a motive, its to bring the dead back to life, but to look like a abomination? What? What about our main characters' tragedy? How does that tie in? How about the 2 guys that burned up the bitch in the beginning? Howd they know that house was going to be cursed and why did they give a shit? They give lousy explanations and its why I am being quite generous with my score.

I felt the same exact way about The Void, wanting to like it, and yet I couldn't finish it. I didn't think the acting was all that great either, but that was probably more the fault of the awful dialogue and pretty much every character feeling like they were written to one-up each other as far as who could be the most annoying person in that damn hospital. There is something to be said about horror movies that do all their monster/gore with practical FX work at least, so the movie had that going for it, but in that regard I can always just watch The Thing again.

Honestly man I LOVE horror. And you seem to nitpick a lot, but I am the opposite. Its very easy for me to suspend disbelief when its horror and just enjoy whats going on. Especially when great aesthetics and atmospheric horrors are my favorites. There are a lot of lowkey indie horrors I LOVE you'd prob say "meh" to.

The Void was incredibly atmospheric and a very fun ride. The make up was also amazing. The story was clear as day to me by the end so the confusion surprises me.

We Are Still Here is just a really, really good haunted house flick. Nothing more to say about that one really. If you like haunted house films, absolutely you should give this one a watch.

It Follows is def a modern day classic. But there are plenty of lowkey horrors over the recent years that might be flawed but I think are B horror classics themselves. The Invitation, Starry Eyes, Kill List immediately come to mind sure I can come up with a few more with some thought.

Honestly middling horror for me is usually run of the mill movies with no style or interesting characters. See them all the time considering I watch a ridiculous amount of horror. Recently watched an 80s B horror movie called Witchboard, i'd consider that scored in the middle. Sadly thats only one that immediately comes to mind as the horrors i've watched recently have all been good at the least lol (Super Dark Times, Better Watch Out, The Transfiguration. Shout out to all of those, solid horrors made this year)
