10 Cloverfield Lane 8.5/10
When
Cloverfield came out, I saw it with as much anticipation as the next person. Then, I never saw it again. When this was announced, I thought it was going along with an idea I heard when
Cloverfield came and went. The idea was that other movies would come out with different areas of the city that was attacked and wed see how others cope with the giant monster roaming thru the city. Gladly, this movie has ZERO connection with the former with the same name.
Coming off from criticizing Cinemassacres James's videos being too big, too much, too everything, I find myself liking movies on smaller scales.
Moon,
Castway,
Alien,
The Thing,
Misery these movies have minimal actors with primarily one set. What you have left is acting. In this, you have 3 actors stuck in a bunker surviving an alleged holocaust type of "attack." John Goodman plays a Kathy Bates type of character, only with him, you dont know if hes insane, emotionally destroyed, or scared to shit. Our lead actress doesnt know if hes telling the truth about the atmosphere on the surface and beneath Goodmans emotional surface. The environment forces the characters to interact and we get to have some development, otherwise, not found in louder movies.
At first, I did not care to seek this movie out as it reminded me of a possible
The Village outcome. However, in the other thread that was filled with spoilers, it was implored that this movie is NOT like the village (yes I deliberately will not bold it twice). Its not as boring and does have a payout. Ive read some people didnt like the ending and I scratch my head as to why that is..
