Alright guys, I'm going to join my highschool wrestling team, but I got a few questions. So if you guys could help me out it would be appreciated. I'm 6'0 , 165 pounds and very athletic. This will be my first and last year of wrestling being that I'm a senior. Is it possible to compete competively at my healthy natural weight without having to cut water weight or do all the guys cut like that? How long are wrestling practices on average? How long is wrestling season? And what are the weight classes that are close to my weight? That's it guys. Thanks in advance.

People cut so they can be in a position where they are alot more competitive or to fill a needed position. So I guess depending on your team you might have to bump up or cut. The weight classes around your weight are 152, 160, and 171. I don't mean to discourage you or anything, because I think it's great you decided to join the team, but those weights are usually pretty stacked minus the occasional fatty that doesn't belong on the mat. It will be hard to be really competitive as its your fist year, but I'm sure you'll be able to get a few wins regardless of what weight you go. Practices are typically 2-3 hours, longer on saturdays, and the season usually starts late october, early november, and ends around february depending on how far you get. Good luck with your season.

Yeah I figured it would be pretty damn hard. But I wasn't planning to take state or anything like that. The main reason I'm joining is to learn for mma. As long as I can get some decent skill in wrestling I'll be happy. Thanks Bumma.

Yeah I'm wrestling for the first time this year. Going to open mats twice a week to get started, lifting weights, running sprints, etc. Our practice is from 2:30 to 5:00, on saturday's it's an hour long and all we do is run, but it's usually like 5-6 miles. I'm 6'0 160, if I can, I'm gonna wrestle at 160 or 152, depending on what the coach says. Wrestling season here is from December through late February.

yea this is my first year and i am a senior to i am doing it to loose weight, mental support and to get a start in mma, i know i am gonna have to drop weight since i am like 195 now, i forget the weight classes i am near, but i am going to practice monday i will tell ya later,

yea i hope i have a good season to first practice tomorrow so stoked

I began Wrestling my Senior Year of High School. I never missed a practice, kept a proper Diet, Worked on my Cardio Every morning, and did only body weight strength exercises. I gave it my full commitment and it payed off, I finished 3rd in City at 64kg, and 4th in region.

well went to practice today and it sucked, because i could'nt do anything since they started a week earlier i could'nt do anything because i did'nt have a physical so i am trying to go one tomorrow so i can practice but it looked cool especially the guantlet that looked cool.

i talked to the coach he said i will be wrestling at 215 weighed at 198 so i am cool can't go hire than that.

but sad thing is i have have over proctetive parents, my mom is scared i might get hurt and my stepddad is being a douch saying its your last year and your about to go to college and you don't need to do this.

i mad that this happends all the time i want to join a sport and i really want to do this.

You said you weigh 195-198 now, but how solid is it?? If you are carrying some excess, you might think about trimming to 189. You could weigh in at 189 and wresetle up one weight at 215 if that's where the team needs a man; then if you get good quick you would be eligible to go to 189 in late season and possibly have a better shot in tourneys. Just my 2c.
I know from "overprotective", believe me. I was undersized in high school and when I wanted to try wresstling at a college that was just startiong it, my mom was "you're too weak, you're too frail". OK, I wasn't strong, but I was *flexible*, and a flexible guy czan get away with so much in wrestling -- as I found out some years later when I finally hit the mats in a YMCA class.
Good luck. Keep us posted on the outcome.

ok well i am going to get my physical today so i am straight and i found some shoes for 10.00, so i am good, so can't wait to start

i was a freshman last year and it was my first year. Thats how i got interested in MMA also, one of my coaches trains and then i started watching the ppv's and looked up a school and now im training. Wrestling offers a great foundation to build upon. Plus, it's a bad ass sport. StillStandN, what school do u go to, im in Orlando.

I train sanshou in the Fort Lauderdale area, Davie to be exact. Here's the website for itFlsanshou.com . If you were talking about which highschool, I go to Western Highschool, where the group Pretty Ricky came from.

well now i really can't wrestle my mom won't take me to get a physical kinda sucks i wanted to so bad, so now i have to wait till i get into college and join the wrestling club also the college i am going to has a martial arts club where they do kick boxing and i think bjj so its cool just got to wait 9 months so i can really start training in somthing so i have nine months to get where i want and that is at 175.

Why won't she let you get a physical? Your health insurance should cover it. I'm getting one on the 18th.

this is my first year as a senior too! we have pre conditioning before actual practices which start on the 15h, but i never pictured the conditioning being so hard. although after every practice i feel reborn. im pretty nervous though, since i weigh 152 and everyone says its one of the hardest weight classes....

GUYS Listen......You are all young and will learn alot this year. What I would do is try to learn the moves your coach shows you but find 1 or 2 from each position (standing, bottom and top) that you are REALLY comfy with and practice the hell out of them and go for them during your matches at practice...
I have seen guys come in and make varisty by learning and being proficient at one or to moves AND having great stamina.

We had a kid almost make state his 1st yeart in the 189lb class by being really strong, fit and having great pummeling skills and was able to land the bearhug trip or toss on almost everyone he wreslted. He was also really good with the half nelson on top and great at standups on bottom..

well my parents are over protective so she said if i can get a physical i can do wrestling but she is my only ride and i don't have a car so i am screwed so i have to wait untill college and join that club but that gives me time where i can get into shape and the weight i want to be at

Marine, your school doesn't offer physicals? When I was in high school, a doctor would come by once every season to give a whole bunch of athletes physicals. It was pretty cheap too. And if you want to do wrestling and your mom won't give you a ride, can you take a bus or walk home?

yea but i got in late and stuff and it was a deadline i had to get my physical in and i had 2 days to get it in and i lived around the corner from a urgent care center that does them for 5 dollars but i could'nt get a ride.
