Movies Highlander (1986) is an underated movie

Queen is thr fucking soundtrack? Christ, no wonder why ive skipped this.

So basically, it’s just the first one and stop.

But you’re right that the lore seems so ripe for further exploration. Rare movie where I think a reboot or remake would be a solid idea.

Get a legit visionary type of director like Denis Vileneuve to helm it and I bet it could be awesome.

As mentioned its actually mostly Michael Kamen during the film but I think Queen suit it well.

I think your never going to recreate the wild mix of styles of the original but I certainly wouldnt mind seeing the concept done by a quality director with a decent budget.

Personally I think they should just take the basic idea and redo it with different characters in a different location/time.

There was one after End Game called The Source. That one was Syfy movie channel bad.

You should watch the first one and then the anime. The anime is honestly done well. The director was involved in Vampire D Bloodlust, Ninja Scroll and other classics.

that would be an interesting take for sure.

I don’t even think you need a lot of sequels but just one good modern adaptation.

Because of the Queen soundtrack the great Michael Kamen score often gets overlooked.

Absolutely right. Kamen was a beast.
I believe he did The Dead Zone, too. One of my favorite 80s films and an excellent, unnerving score that perfectly complements the narrative.

I knew he’d passed but I had no idea it was two decades ago! Young guy, was only in his mid 50s.

I've said before they ran into the same bad decisions as the Terminator...sending more Highlanders and more Terminators to whatever year the new movie comes out to battle it out in the present.

Terminator should have had the future war.

Highlander sequels (prequels) should have explored the past.

I would have been totally down for a Ramirez prequel, a Kurgan horror prequel, or just whoever Connor had to fight to get to some next leg of the journey after Ramirez was gone but before 1986.

Highlander and Terminator were really the same idea at the core. Killing machine gets sent from the future (Terminator) or the past (Highlander) to fight it out in the mid-80s and the fate of humanity hangs in the balance. Dumb that they tanked both franchises the exact same way...by sending more villains from the future and past.

Yeah thats probably what they should have done at the time althougth its way too late now.

I think you could take the very basic plot of the original and just shift the setting/time, the lead character could be a crusader, could be a Roman legionary, etc, could have scenes in any time period you wanted pretty much.

Again I don't think your going to get the same MTV style down again but I wouldnt mind seeing a "classy" take on the genre by a director like Vileneuve although actually wasnt Chad Stahelski involved in the past? I would still like to see that as you know the action would be great and he's shown he can do [pretty strong characterisation.

Who you cast is a big factor as well, I think Lambert really did have that mysterious intense side to him which made the character work, not sure I can see Henry Cavil pull that off. I spose Ryan Gosling is always worth mentioning with that kind of character, if they went female and stayed French I think Lea Seydoux is a lot like Lambert, same intensity and strangeness.

It’s one concept that could have an amazing expanded “universe” of characters.

I looked up if there were any novels but the one I saw didn’t look great.

The Lore of Highlander and the first movie are phenomenal though. The sequel? Not so much. Let’s pretend like that isn’t canon.
The show, until the finale of season 5 was phenomenal for its day. I still go back and watch the show every 5 or 6 years.

I’ll second myself to say the show did explore many of the themes and was fantastic. Only bad part of the show was there were a decent omount of stinker and filler episodes since it was made in the 90s with the 22 episode season format.

Still, episodes like “Band of Brothers” and “Forgive us for our Trespasses” we great.

What's wrong with the live action show?

Which one? there were multiple Highlander TV spin-offs in the 1990s

I never paid attention to them but I was aware they introduced a female immortal at some point

I did always think Paul was a little bland personally, not bad and he did pull of stoic well but he didnt really have the otherworldliness of Lambert.

As you say I think the show did struggle with the format of the time, some episodes feel strenched out and thin, others feel quite rushed, I actually think they'd have been better off making it more like a series of TV movies, take the better plots and expand them out past an hour.

Yeah Lambert was never the greatest actor but he had a good screen presence and that otherworldly strangeness was apparent in French stuff like Subway. Which also had another guy with a similar strange presence in Jean Reno.

Yeah Gosling would be reasonably good. At least they didn't do this in the late 2000s or it would have been Shia LaBeouf.

Clancy Brown and Connery do get mentioned more with the acting but I kind of feel like thats almost expected for blockbusters, that you have some serious chops for the villain and the mentor but Lambert's intense presence and general strangeness were I think a pretty big reason why the film worked.

Gosling I spose maybe almost too famous now but he is someone you could instantly pick out of a crowd via "otherness" the same way, Drive being an obvious example of that being used to the films advantage.

I spose French actors naturally come to mind due to Lambert and I think they do tend to have that kind of appeal quite oftem, intense and a little strange playing up screen presense, switch surname and firstname and Lambert WIlson I think could also have pulled off the role back in the day, maybe even Denis Lavant. Again these days actually Seydoux comes to mind first for that kind of brooding intensity, I think you could actually do a female immortal role quite well maybe playing up the "witch" aspect? medieval French peasant girl gets run though by some rapist knight, doesn't die and gets thrown in a river as a witch.

Tcheky Karyo would have been a decent option back in the day as well if you're talking about French actors. Thomas Kretschmann might have been a decent choice for a German option a few years ago as well but they're both fairly old now.

I think for American actors Jake Gyllenhaal might have been a decent choice and still could be okay. He can pull off the naive guy at the start and also the world weary version as well.

I think 1990ish Kiefer Sutherland would have been pretty decent at the role.

Yeah that French witch story could have been pretty good.
