News Herb Dean reveals eye poke rule change discussions, believes Sean Strickland is gold standard

herb will give you 2 warnings before he gives you another warning
Yo remember when he spotted Tim Sylvia's arm breaking? You literally hear him go OH SHIT

Cut to years later when Derrick Lewis knocks out Curtis Blaydes, and Herb is like outside the Octagon talking to the fans, eatin a corn dog when that happens, and is like 5 mins late on the stoppage

“That last foul, the one with Aspinall, I think the fingers were up, right? So we can agree the fingers were up…'

Exactly. Glad someone finally admitted it. Gane was following the rules as currently written.

The right hand one was bent a little, the left was up. The left did a nice rake job while the right used the slight bend to jab into the socket.

All in all, a very solid eye poke effort by Gane. Got both eyes, didn't make it as blatantly obvious with fingers pointed horizontally. There was some real eye poking skill on display there.

Herb's stumped by the legitimacy of taking a point saying that can lead to a tie. But if a guy would've otherwise won by keeping his opponent in check with outstretched fingers then he doesn't deserve the win anyway.
The Tie Is Now Justified!
There should also be an OFFICIAL... recognition of those who have this foul regularly. For example: 1st eye poke is an accident... give a warning & all good because accidents happen.

Next fight & the same fighter gets his "Mandantory Jones Eye Poke" again... & maybe he gets another warning, but from here on out.... he's OFFICIALLY "marked"... to where it's an IMMEDIATE deduction if he does it again.

We gotta do something. Anyone who fights Gane or Jonez haz/had to adjust their fighting style to expect an eye poke. This is #1 Bullshit, & givez an advantage to teh cheater.

He also said one in every 14 fights currently has an eye poke.
Serious but not serious: just dock two points for the first and then another point for any subsequent eye pokes. Maybe this will lead to some excitement where eye gougers are woefully behind and have to start going for the finish to win

It's unbelievable that a referee is actually saying this out loud in public. "We selectively enforce the rules when it can affect the outcome of the contest." And more unbelievable that no one will care.
Herb's been saying that since his work in the Conor Khabib fight. And was still getting praised as the gold standard of reffing.

Everytime I look back on Jones career I become less convinced he would have been as successful as he was in any other era.
12-6s would have been amazing for his ground and pound, but you actually enforce eye pokes and competent steroid testing and there is no way he makes it through undefeated IMO.
Agreed. Even when he's not actively poking, he's always threatening to

The rules still forbid eye pokes, no matter how they happens.

But extending the fingers towards the opponent is illegal, regardless of whether you end up poking an eye.

Anyone have a Sean Strickland gif showing what herbs talking about? I never noticed Sean doing anything different with his hands but then I again I wasn't exactly looking for it either

This would lead to a HUGE rise in nutshots.

Accidental... of course.

Great news and article. Hope for the best.
