Herb Dean is the worst referee

When he's good, he's good. When he's bad, he's one of the worst. That's the problem - he's incredibly inconsistent. Making mistakes is going to happen but he'll these awful stoppages and then later that night, let someone almost die. With Big John McCarthy, I can count on one hand the number I times I've seen him mess up. He always let fighters have a chance to recover when they were hurt and stopped it at the right time. Meanwhile, Herb will stop a fight when a guy takes a clean shot or let someone take 5 unconscious shots. You never know what you are going to get.

Herb is definitely awful. Lots of early and late stoppages. Not even consistently a just bleed ref.

Was it herb or someone else who allowed CB Dolloway to nearly die? I can’t even remember who he was fighting, it was probably 10 years ago though. CB was curled up on the ground while his opponent was pounding him for like 5 minutes.

Yeah that was Herb. Only reasonable explanation for that is that Herb had money on that fight going to the next round or something like that. That was just crazy.

surprised at the goddard hate, always thought he was widely considered one of the better ones. for me it's him and herzog who are consistently good.

Salty izzy fans is all

Goddard is awful about 50% of the time. Way too involved in the fights.
Goddard is kinda the opposite of Herb. Herb screws up because he can't commit to a decision and kinda gets caught out of position a lot. He stops it late when it should be earlier and early when it should be later.

Goddard on the other hand is too active within the fight and jumps in way early instead of letting bad situations play out to an actual finish. He is so close to the action he sees fighters get hurt bad and thinks they are out. Those 1-2 punches might end in a full KO or miss completely resulting in a different outcome. It's too cautious in a sport that people can get dropped and then recover by simply tying up there opponent and not taking shots for a bit.

Rosenthal was the gold standard IMO
I semi-defended Goddard up until the Baki-Doumbe fight, but that was where he jumped the shark.

Not even consistently a just bleed ref.
I guess I'll pile on. He seems to become affected by audience/commentators reactions during the event such that he will adjust the way he refs. So, if he gets criticism in a match for stopping too early, well you betcha he'll do a late stoppage for a later match. Or vice versa.

There are a lot of people who like the idea of a ref, but then get all fucking ornery anytime a ref makes comments about intervening like Goddard frequently does

I only watch couple fights, but two I was rewatching past couple of days is Jones vs Cormier 2 and also the Khabib vs Conor fight

I had watched Khabib vs Conor hated the referee turns out it was Herb Dean, and the Jones vs Cormier hated the referee again turns out it was Herb Dean

In the Conor vs Khabib fight there were a lot of illegal stuff Conor did which should've disqualified him anyway

Starting with the illegal knee, but everyone knows this, the multiple punches to the back of the head Conor threw as Khabib held him down, he was never warned for those, or after the damage had been done; no one talks about this, but Conor hit the back of Khabib's head multiple times in that fight, the knee was a more blatant violation, not to mention cage grabbing etc.

I had the same problem in the Jones vs Cormier 2, Jon won the fight fair and square, but after DC was on the ground Jon threw at least 4 shots to the back of DC's head with full power

The damage is done at that point, doesn't matter if you stop it, the back of the head can ruin lives not just careers, and it's sad that one corrupt referee takes away years of your life

Now, I know he's just a small part of the whole big puzzle, and the UFC likely had ulterior motives especially in the Khabib fight, the Jones v DC 2 not so much, but especially the Conor vs Khabib fight with how blatantly Conor was cheating and nothing was being said.

Still, right now he's like a legend in the sport people go far as to call him, "the best referee" etc. this guy's one of the worst refs in the business, probably ruined careers of 10s if not 100s of fighters letting the opponents leave them brain-dead, some probably dead, and then people call him a legend, and one of the best referees in the sport, just shows how corrupt the sport is and the people saying that which is the vast majority of "fans" are

He is one of the worst referees in the sport, one of the worst human beings I've ever seen in life, and the biggest fraud when it comes to his credentials
'one of the worst human beings I've ever seen in life'

You have gone full retard there. He might be a shit ref, but the worst human being?

There are barely any MMA refs as it is.
A handful of refs that ref in major orgs too.

Herb is not even top 5 worst. You just have a gold fish memory like all the MMA community.
