Haven't personally done it but from what folks have said, the armor helps but shit still hurts.

Video above shows our man throwing spinning shit and knees and doing more damage with buckler punches / backfists, knees, and clinch takedowns than with the sword.

Yes, it hurts. The armor does help a lot though. Swords don't really hurt, half the time you don't even realize when you get hit with them. Maces, axes, and falchions hurt a little bit, mainly with big hits. Two handers hurt like hell when they swing hard, getting hit with a hard shot by a two handed axe hard feels similar to eating a roundhouse kick. Getting hit with one in a helmet would probably be like getting headkicked while wearing a football helmet I suppose. Besides that, punches, especially with shields give decent concussive force to hurt with a hard punch. Same with kicks and knees. Swords are fast but just don't have the mass to hurt.

Yea thats why i was wondering if weapons hurt since why not just drop the sword and throw hands at other guy but apperantly its against rules lol

Hits on armour are cool, you almost don't feel them, unless it's a halberd.

What people do however is aim for the gaps. If they're nice they just do it with good technique but some fully wind into it. Then it can be decent damage. Usually just mad bruising but I've seen a broken collarbone. Depends on the level of competition and mutual decision as it happens.

I punched a friend in the chest on sat, and bent the brig plating into his solar plexus, titanium armour is great at being light but people lie about it's strength imo. He had to sit for a bit.

I've TKOd someone with a hit to the head, but never experienced similar. As a bigger dude with a tank build I'm mostly cool.

You can hold the sword and punch fine.

Most of the sport if you're not dueling or pro fighting is judo though.

Yea i figured this is a grappling heavy activity looking at vids on youtube. Wrestling/judo/sambo likely works best

Yeah, you have to be armed. Swords do have a benefit in pro-fights though, they are fast. Good for scoring points, setting up the pace, keeping distance. Basically the jab of armored combat.

Are you lefty or you go buckler in dominant hand on purpose for striking with it?

I swap between rounds. My right hand is my power and so when I want to focus on hitting harder I fight with my buckler in my right hand. I like to use my sword in my right hand round one because we are both fresh and I want more speed that round. That strategy has worked out a few times so far. and it really throws guys off when I swap round 2.

I did it similar when I was still training and competing in MMA. Went southpaw when I wanted my jabs and lead hooks to have nastier power, but my left jab was always faster.

Ok yeah that's what I thought I saw (the rd 2 swap).

It worked well, dude was starting to gas and getting lit up by the buckler right crosses and backfists.

I really don't get these rules, man... so, wrestling seems to be banned (?), and instead, people whack each other with blunt force until one stumbles? Which is like the polar opposite of how people would have fought a duel back in the day? Why not leave the armour off and do a Dog Brothers format with only gloves and fencing masks?

Wrestling is allowed, did you not see that in nearly every match? My own ended on the ground. AMCF and AMMA have a 10 second time limit before they stand you up. Buhurt International has a 30 second limit and Armored League recently had unlimited ground time. I prefer longer ground time because I have a pretty solid grappling background.

And it’s not wack each other until one stumbles, you wack each other until the round either ends or you get a knockout or Tko, or until the other guy yields by typically taking a knee.

Yes, in tournaments this is how they fought back then. Maces and warhammers were a thing. They typically used daggers and halfsworded for thrusts to end or cause a yield back then, but in the early days of the sport it got a lot of guys hospitalized so they banned it.

And your suggestion is ditch the armor and box? The armor and weapons are the whole point. I’d just go back to MMA otherwise. We haven’t even covered team fights, mass battles, and sword duels.

I looked at the Dog Brothers. So, we would literally die without armor using tap fencing mask. We use full steel weapons. They hurt even wearing plate armor. Ditching the steel defeats the whole purpose of fighting in armor. It’s an entirely different fight wearing armor then just wearing a fencing mask.

Here is a team fight to give you an idea of different categories of combat within the overall sport.
