Ok, so I bought the Star Wars Collection on Steam to get in the right state of mind for the next two weeks. There's a lot of dead meat there, but I figured it had enough quality in it to make it worth the low price.

The contents (with notes on personal experience) are as follows:

Dark Forces
KOTOR
The Force Unleashed I and II
Battlefront II
Empire at War
Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight
Jedi Academy
JK: Mysteries of the Sith
JK II: Jedi Outcast
KOTOR 2
Republic Commando
Starfighter
The Clone Wars

I've played KOTOR I and Dark Forces I and II, but otherwise, I don't really know any of them. I remember oddly little of KOTOR, even though I enjoyed it tremendously, while the two DF games are for some reason quite fresh in my mind.

So, what should I play? It's a fine balance here between quality and datedness. Any opinions? Advice? Neccesary mods?

KOTR I and II, then Battlefront II, easily.

Thanks for the reccomendation. I wondered a little if I were going to jump right to KOTOR 2, but am a little on the fence about it, since I remember so little.

This. That will probably consume all your time, too.

If you burn through that then the obvious choice for story after that lies in a decision between the narratives of Kyle Katarn (he spans 5 games) or Starkiller in the Force Unleashed games.

Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight was one of the best games ever. It's old as fuck though, and the graphics definitely don't hold up. I didn't play it for the graphics but some people would be turned off by that. I love the DF/JK series.

KOTOR I and II are musts. You don't need to play them in order, but you should for the lore.

The Force Unleashed ones are pretty fun but not the deepest or longest of games. You can blow through them pretty quickly. I recommend playing them just so you can say you played them and you will have some fun. Force Lightning and Force choking the shit out of people never gets old.

Republic Commando is a solid FPS but I don't remember too much about that one.

I used to love playing a RTS named Star Wars Rebellion it was so fun.

Battlefront II is definitely good stuff.

Empire At War was a really cool Strategy game also.

I was thinking about this package on Steam also, but I'm gonna hold off, I got a few others already recently. and have played most of those games multiple times. Much fun to be had there for sure bro!

Fucking loved this game. But man, it was a time sink.

For me, it's similar to the Total Wars games (Like Rome and Medieval). I can't believe Rome Total War is 11+ years old. Still holds up for me.

I would LOVE a Total War remake of Star Wars Rebellion (Didn't really enjoy the Empire at War version). The ship battles were a little janky back then. I learned quickly that a fully upgraded squad of B-Wing Fighters could wreck even the largest capital ships.

Also, since the Empire Characters looked mostly the same (outside of Darth Vadar and the Emperor) there were many fan-made cards to provide variety, like Thrawn and other Empire characters from the post-Return of the Jedi books.

KOTOR 1 and 2, Jedi Knight 1 and 2, and Empire at War are gems. The rest are all fun, just nothing top-tier.

Definitely go with KOTOR 1 first.

WOW dude, you just blew my freaking mind. I love the Total War Series and Rome is the first one I played. I was hooked on that and all the mods, expansions etc... for almost 2 years. I've played Medieval 2, Shogun 2, just finished playing Empire:TW a couple months ago. I bought Attila recently on one of the Steam sales, and when I wind down on Fallout I plan on playing that.

I also remember playing Rebellion for a couple of years when it came out and even played online so much was in a clan and played ranked matches! I was so addicted to that game. Just spam build escort/fleet carriers which hold 6 fighter squadrons a piece. Build 100 of those and you got a mix of 600 B Wings/Tie Defenders and you would just slaughter fleets especially putting one of your characters as a Commander. I had been looking for my Rebellion disk recently. Wiping out the entire galaxy with a few Death Stars was great, also seeing how powerful you could get Luke was cool.

Other games that were epic were X wing, TIE Fighter and X-wing vs. TIE Fighter. So much fun, having serious nostalgia now!

Thanks for all the input, guys. Much appreciated! KOTOR I and II looks like it's by far the most reccomended, and they aren't all that old either, so I'll start there. Then Battlefront. After that, if I still have any steam left, I'll try to figure out what kind of game I feel the most like playing. It would be interesting to take a look at the Jedi Knight series, since I know the start of it (and the most dated part of it). That said, this backhanded compliment...

The Force Unleashed ones are pretty fun but not the deepest or longest of games. You can blow through them pretty quickly.
...is a weird kind of reccomendation it itself. Maybe I'll use these like pallet cleansers between the big ones.

Btw, I played Rebellion to death numerous times. But honestly, it was mostly kind of just a empire building game without any real opposition. Most of my joy from it was in some perverse OCD organizing of my Star Destroyers into fleets, naming them and stuff. The AI was never able to put up any semblance of opposition at all.

Other games that were epic were X wing, TIE Fighter and X-wing vs. TIE Fighter. So much fun, having serious nostalgia now!
I loved TIE fighter so much that I was deeply and bitterly dissapointed when I read the Thrawn-books that they drew on for inspiration. Sometimes, hinting at a story and leaving the rest for imagination is much better than the actual story. X-Wing is awesome as well, but TIE fighter was the game that made the whole thing sublime for me.

For legit mulitplayer lightsaber duels, play Jedi Outcast/Academy.

The saber control and multiplayer are lightyears ahead of anything currently out.
I hope they remake the Jedi Outcast series in next gen. Easily the most underrated SW game.

Battlefront 2 was one of my favorite games of all time, so I'd go with that.

Agreed - Really enjoyed it too.

My favorite part of that game was the Local Co-op Conquest mode. Playing with my friends/kids on the coach was loads of fun.

It's really unbelievable that they didn't include it in the new Battlefront game.

The Empire strikes back on snes is the best star wars game ever

Rebellion is so legit. One of the GOAT 4X games for my money

It's also now on GOG for $6

Oh, damn. I'll save that for the hollydays, I think. That one's a huge time sink.

Crap, I went down memory lane looking up info on SWR today... lol.

This is a great article on it from a few years ago.

I think you'll need Dosbox to play it on a old CD. But I guess the version at GOG works well with compatibility mode. I've played a few times over the years, but I don't have the time for it anymore.

This review from GOG cracked me up.

Destroys friendships by brayrobert201

This is about the game itself rather than the GOG release.
The MP destroys friendships.
This being said, anyone who cares little enough about you to laugh at killing Thrawn and a Death Star (as well as a couple of other commanders whose names escape me) in one battle probably shouldn't be your friend.
15 years later I still fume about that when reminded.

There's still some mod's out for it, though the website appears to have little to no activity... :icon_sad:

Unfortunately, many of the old awesome custom player cards have gone missing, which is pretty amazing since nothing ever seems to completely disappear on the internet. I really tried to find them, but they're gone... just gone.

It looks like people still upload them to that website, but they're mostly just recent photos and not pixel art from way back when.

Here's an old player made game guide. It's pretty well done.

I'm think I may just have to blow an entire weekend on this... if the family will let me.

lol - I found them... There's about 1000+ from the expanded universe. They were on that SWR mod website, but the main link was broken and didn't work. I looked at the other card categories though...

so yay for me
