height issues

Sorry, but I find it hard to believe you cant get a triangle, or some variation thereof on the guy. Maybe the choke wouldnt be textbook, but surely you can fit a head and an arm between your legs. I never said the triangle would be the best option, and clearly it isnt. But in my experience someone with good technique can triangle pretty much anyone unless youre talking serious extremes. Im not being rude, and maybe you really cant nail the guy for whatever reason. But i think that puts you in the minority when it comes to the triangle. Its a choke perfectly designed for small guys to use on big guys, Ive never had a problem with it and im 5'8".
Lobo is a brown belt who as a result probably has good technique. I do think he is right, sometimes guys with broad backs, thick necks and muscular arms are just too bulky to lock a triangle on properly. I've strained my calf a few times on really broad guys trying to lock the triangle and just end up switching to an armbar most of the time. I think with really big guys the no arm triangle where you grab your own shin is the best option since triangling just their head isn't as much trouble.

I'm 5'6 and I can lock a triangle on almost anyone.

I won't always get it as a submission, but I can get it on.

Like i said before, I wasnt criticizing the guy. I do agree that some guys are too thick for the conventional triangle, which is why I said i had a hard time believing he couldnt "sink a triangle or some variation thereof ". There are so many triangles that even though it may not be the best option, it is always an option. Ive seen Royler lock a triangle over his toes so it can definitely be effective even if its not a textbook choke. But if for some reason its not working out, there is always the armless triangle, the reverse triangle, etc....

I went for the triangle and my toes (my two big toes barely fuckin touched). I had good angle and everything. This guy is a fuckin ox and there's no way I'm getting any variation of the triangle on him. Unless you've seen this dude you have no idea the scale I'm talking about. He's 200lb's heavier than me bro. Like I said, sometimes guys are just too damned big. The biggest dude I've triangled consistently was a 280lber.

And asel1 can vouch for my triangles and for the fact this dude is insanely huge.

fair enough man. Ive never rolled with someone 200lbs heavier than me so you would know better than i would whether or not you could triangle the guy. How big are you by the way?

ok, Im 5'8" and weight the same. I have long legs though for someone who is fairly short so that may have something to do with it. Either way 200lbs is a huge difference and i still cant say I would or wouldnt be able to triangle the guy, although something tells me it would probably be futile. One things for damn sure though, ide never pick a fight with a guy that size on the street.

Heh, I am 5'3'' and stocky. I can't perform a good triangle on many of the people I roll with, so I avoid looking for the sub more than I do positioning. Working from bottom underneath a taller guy is tough, but he naturally gives you more space to squirm about, so use side to side movement . Work for takedowns rather than taking the bottom position. I like side mount top best. In full mount, my power base is not wide enough, so I can be easily turned if I am rolling with a taller guy.
