how important is it to maintain a "targeted heartrate" while running/biking? im trying to lose weight and get in shape.
 
Very important, you can do a search on goolge to find target heart rate, then go from there. If you want to loose weight you keep your heart rate at the lower end of the spectrum. If you want to increase your cardio then you go to the high end.
 
# 220 minus your age is your max BPM (beats per minute). find 65% for fat burning zone Find 85-90% for your cardio zone
