Actually you can defend yourself or your family but you better be damn careful on the force. Say open hand not closed. The key also being the number of attackers. Let them come to you and slap the hell out of them. Some minors have the idea you can't hit them no matter what but thats not true and they are the ones that need some education.

When I was 6, I got belt to ass and locked in my room, no atari, no tv for not listening and following my mom and dads lead as I crossed the street wrong, ran thru an intersection ahead of the pack, all in front of my friends and their family on our way to the playground.
