which is kind of dumb. The average Mexican is about half native. This guy looks a little more. So calling him native American could be more accurate than calling him white.

You are expecting much from a non-scientific racial system invented in the XIX century.

If you really want to be anal about it, just put "mixed" or change race to "skin color", that's kind of how we do it in Mexico we simply describe physical characteristics, so anyone with white skin is "white" independently of race.

They are supposed to differentiate between white and non-white hispanics, but they have been progressively rounding more and more toward white since Zimmerman.

Again, the purpose of racial classification was to "properly" segregate Black people and Asians, Mexicans and Latinos got a pass over the fact that there were tons in America and race had very serious consequences when the classification was made.

The easiest solution would simply to use color of skin.

Going by the colour of skin is pretty useless. Especially when Spaniards can be just as dark as natives despite being a completely separate race. Hell, the guy in my avatar is almost as dark as a native and he's British.

We already know that Latino gangs are one of the most prolific criminal organizations in the country.

But you want to make this about Latinos being somehow inherently violent (which is kind of hard since Latinos are very mixed)? this doesn't seems to me like a productive discourse, specially since this isn't even a gang related crime.

Asians and Blacks are the only easy ones to identify but that doesn't applies to Caribbean Latinos that have tons of mixing with black people

Most crime is directed against one's own race, but that isn't necessarily the case when victims are selected at random for a thrill. I'm not aware of any research on this, but any social scientist wanting to study it is going to rely on data from law enforcement and that data has become increasingly obscured by individuals like this Jesus being documented as white when he clearly isn't. I am not arguing in favour of some hard scientific definition of race, but race is a sociological reality even if racial boundaries can't be established biologically. With regard to how Mexicans identify, I get the impression that some do want to be seen as white, but I used to live in a Mexican neighbourhood in Texas and I definitely experienced some discrimination and whether it was technically racism or something similar is a bit besides the point.

Have not seen the video, do the kids correctly identify the cyclists as a white man? because on a distance in a car its pretty hard to tell someone's race unless he is black.

The data is already there, white hispanics = latinos, non-hispanic whites = whites.

They were clearly fine with murdering this guy. Why would them saying that they were targeting white people raise the seriousness of the murder?

Or rather, it would support that these youths went out that day looking to murder somebody, and that this wasn't just a random act of violence in the middle of crime spree. In my opinion, that variable can/should change the weight of the sentence they receive.

Also, while I don't particularly put much stock in a crime being driven(no pun intended) by "hate", hate crimes are legally held to a different standard than crimes where bigotry is not a motivating factor.

So yes, if one of these R-words let it slip that they were intentionally looking to kill a white person(or sub in any demographic there), I would endorse a stronger sentence(in this case, the death penalty). If, however, the incident was as random as the video makes it appear, I would endorse life without parole.

Most outrage seems to be from cases where there is no prosecution or even an arrest and protests kind of work.

AJ Owens or Ahmaud Arbery for example, without protests there wouldn't even be an arrest.

I don't really get the whole premeditated thing in this case. I think about a crime of passion like a person is overcome with rage at seeing their spouse cheating and kills one of them. That makes sense as a non premeditated crime and is different than a criminal choosing to murder someone because they just feel like doing it.

But in this case you have two guys choosing to murder a random guy on the street. I don't get how that is less serious than if they discussed murdering people let's say before they stole the car. Why would that be more serious?

The hate crime stuff is fucking stupid. Hate is basically always part of these crimes in one form or another. It's not a worse crime because they specifically hate one particular thing like that person's race.

Most people agreed that the police officer that kneeled on George Floyd was wrong but there was still a huge response right? The point here is the response changes dramatically when the races change. That is simply undeniable.

Change the races in the ahmaud arbery case and people would have responded to it completely different.
