Have you retained the foreign language you learnt at school?

I took Latin in high school. I remember a decent amount of it, more about the grammar rules and stuff rather than vocabulary. We mostly just translated stuff from Latin to English, so actually attempting to speak it wouldn't go well, but I can usually still figure out what Latin phrases mean.

English.

My first language was Hangugeo (S. Korean). Forgot most of it.

From living in Florida, I picked up rudimentary Spanish.

Fuck no... I barely speak English

But seriously, I can remember bits of German and Spanish, certainly not fluent in either though.

hola
como se llama

that's about the extent of all I've retained

I think I'm the only student in my school who ever failed Spanish 1. When I took German 1 I couldn't count without doing it in Spanish. I retained almost no German and almost no Spanish beyond some counting and the alphabet in German. If I could do it again I'd try harder to learn Spanish

I did Italian up until Year 11, very rusty but I can usually figure out from the written word what the gist is.

Did a year of Japanese in year 9, was able to speak basics when over there (hello, how are you, thank you etc). Japanese is a lot easier than Mandarin for an English speaker, did a few Mandarin classes when I worked for a Taiwanese company, bloody hell the tones in that language are hard to get your head around.

Unless you use it you lose it pretty quickly I find.

I learned more spanish from talking to latinas than I ever did in class.

I wish that I had the option of learning Japanese in high school.

I think we just had French, Spanish and Italian? Or was it German? I think Urdu as well?

I didn't have much passion for any of those countries at the time.

We did have Japanese foreign exchange students as well.

I've gone through phases of trying to learn Japanese, Thai and Chinese on apps, but the phases didn't last very long. Every time I look to learn about the world, I feel a bit of grief about not being there myself, so I give up.

Spanish - not really. I understand better than I speak. Its reasonable enough to get by in Spanish speaking countries that don't speak super fast or super crazy (Chile I'm looking at you).

English, but learned more of it by watching movies, YT, gaming ect, and have now lived in an english speaking country for a while

Was just thinking the other day I'm forgetting how to write the Japanese alphabets and reading them takes some time.

I recently got a 365 day streak on DuoLingo learning german. I started out with Danish mostly out of mockery, they have so many funny / borderline retarded sounding words that I just enjoyed. After 80 days or so I had built the habit of spending a few minutes everyday learning so I switched to something that could actually be useful.

Nah, I tool 3 years of Spanish. These days I can order food and understand a little hear and there.
