Seems like there will never be a united Ireland much like there will never be a union of Gaza and the West Bank with Israel. ...and there it is, religion in the middle of the conflict. ...so much hate for one another for so many reasons and so many years. I'm really surprised this issue is going on between the British and Irish in this day and age. Really odd when you think about it.

Something like the Confederacy and the Union not having resolved their issues after the American Civil War. Now Texas and a few other Southern states would only be too happy to leave the Union -- today. For some, that war never really ended. Texas and Alabama went out of their way to ignore federal laws as it related to black integration all the way into the 1960s. They literally told the federal government to go 'fuck themselves', and the federal government didn't really do much about it. Southern tradition runs deep in the U.S. South.

Funny you should say that, both sides adopted each others flags/support for each other decades ago. Here's a 2014 story I randomly googled for you since war room wouldn't let me add pictures:

if i'm being honest most of what I 'know' about the Troubles stems from like entertainment such as the Devil's Own, In the Name of the Father, Blown Away, Sons of Anarchy (haha)

but I imagine the looming Brexit has to be involved somehow
edit: I feel bad for not knowing more about this, my family is from N. Ireland (dad's name is Tyrone, after the county) and I still have relatives that live in Belfast

Yea its been like this a long time, actually other than the warfighting aspects...most of our soldiering skills in Iraq were all taken from tours in Northern Ireland- operating in an environment where terrorists hide within civilian clothing. How to look for weapons caches/how to search for and avoid IEDs etc

Are you claiming the majority in the south would vote for reunification if it was put to a vote? I guess it comes down to how smart the average Irish person is, if they are aware of the costs then it should be a no-brainer no vote but there are plenty of idiots who vote with their hearts rather than their heads.
