Survival of the fittest is different than survival of the richest. A true meritocracy is different. What you are advocating for is a system of elites which is pretty much what we have now.

In uni / college ppl usually does have to talk with ppl about their choosed major and minor subjects, speciality etc.
Ofc also are submitting essays, application letters, CVs, reccomendations and references etc....

Unis and colleges mainly ofc are focused on finiancing and still first thing more or lesser is what you are able to provide as a student in your major and minor subjects or for future speciality.

Why btw someone does think that Harvard is more math focused than MIT or Caltech?

I was pointing out that there really isn't a level playing field for education in our society. A wealthy kid living in an urban area has significant learning advantages over a poor kid in a remote area, for example.
