Half Service Restaurant: How Much To Tip?

I always wonder if and how much tip at a Sonic.

Servers live on "slave" wage.
Most servers can't even afford a meal at the restaurant they work at based on the average hourly wage of $2.50 an hour. Blame the lobbyists for creating this standard wage.
If the servers don't make tips, they are practically working for free after tax deductions from paychecks.
Corporations would be foolish to completely give up their slaves.
Some corporations would even cheer for joy if they had an opportunity to shackle you up to a chain and keep you in the dungeon overnight if they could.

then let them get another job! noone is making them work as servers at a gunpoint.

It literally makes me cringe that some people don't tip 20%. If that's you, here's a little FYI... You embarrass everyone that's with you if you're out in a group. If you don't have the money to tip, you don't have the money to be eating/drinking out, or ordering in.

I'm making a fart sound on my arm right now.

If its not one where they leave you the bill at the end then i tip

If I order at the counter, get my own drinks and clear my own table, what am I tipping them for? That's like leaving a tip at McDonalds... Am I supposed to be doing that???

Im in the service industry, so I tip 20-25% anywhere I eat.

I usually tip 20% but if you give me shitty service and let me die of thirst and hunger then I may give you 5%. And if you ask I'll tell you that you suck to your face.

Come at me bro.

You guys are crazy tipping that much, In the past I've never tipped more than a few quid (less than

You get bad service and you still tip 5%... I don't even.....

Plenty of bad servers out there but people who consistently bitch about food service need to realize it's their fault for going to shitty establishments. It's too easy to research a place for 2 mins to find out what your getting yourself into. It's like whining the knife you paid for at walmart is dull. You're dull for spending cash there and expecting quality.

Two-way street too. I don't know how some adults still haven't gotten around to learning how to read a menu, ask specific questions, and order promptly or ask the server to come back. At that point the table is slowing down everything and if the server is smart they won't make an effort. One table's tip or lack thereof is drop in the bucket and they'll make more money/have a better day neglecting it and focusing on their cooler tables.

Say you go to a restaurant where you order at the counter and get your own drinks. A 'waitress' brings the food to your table with utensils as well as bus it after you've left. How much, if any, would you tip at a place like this and how much do you normally tip at a full service place?

Same question for a buffet style restaurant where wait service takes your dirty dishes and refills drinks.

Also, has anyone worked at a partial service place like these? Are you legally considered a tipped position and do you get less than minimum wage?

They do this at Carls Jr. I don't think you should tip for this kind of half service.

There are a couple cheap Mexican places like that near bars around here and when I go I generally just leave a dollar on the table regardless the order. Tips aren't part of their pay structure, but it's just a kind thing to do.

lol at what I'm hearing in here.

It's not hard to notice a correlation between people who seem to be making disrespectful comments about Monkeys or treating people like crap and not tipping. That's not even a little surprising to me. Anyone that compared Servers to Monkeys should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. As if someone making less money than you is less of a Human Being.

There's no excuse for either... But at the end of the day, cheap people and people that get off on being dickheads are always going to have a reason for doing so in their minds... That's not going to change. And they're always going to be miserable and angry.

But hey, at least you got to keep that few extra dollars, right? And I bet you telling the Server they suck really showed them and everyone around you how Alpha you are...

For anyone interested, the place I was talking about in the OP is a little Italian Restaurant. It would easily pass for a full service style restaurant at first glance. The other decor is nicer than most fancy restaurants you see now days. The food is ~$9 an entree, and when they give you your utensils, they come with a white cloth like they would in a restaurant.

Basically, it's a nice restaurant but with affordable prices and half service. I've been twice and love the place and the food. So for everyone saying Carls Jr, I guess it is very comparable but the service here is nice and friendly and while I certainly wouldn't tip at Carls Jr, the ambiance of this place made me question what the norm was.

This is always the crux if this issue. I'm sure they depend on tips. That doesn't mean they deserve them . I depend on my bonus at work. It doesn't mean I earned it by showing up.

u dont get less than minimum wage without your bonus..

I usually leave a couple bucks. I noticed maybe half the customers actually tip

20% ??? I thought it was 15% standard.....

My favorite is the tip jar out at the DIY frozen yogurt joint.

I come in, grab my own cup, build my own sundae, then weigh it and pay the guy behind the counter. THAT guy has a tip jar.

THAT guy was also a 6'6" 250lb Samoan guy who was giving me the stink eye. You're gawtdamn right I tipped him.

Ridiculous.
But I suppose some of the people in this thread give him 20%...

But some of the yogurt people do come over and talk about the products, give recommendations etc. This is tip worthy.

A few questions I ask myself

- Is there a good atmosphere?
- Is the wait staff friendly or does it feel like I'm putting them out? (Which happens)
- How is the food?
- Does anyone check on us to see if there are any issues or were we satisfied with our meal?
- Are the tables clean?

I base my gratuity upon my overall experience including the above criteria. This goes for any type of restaurant.

in what alternate universe/fantasy land do you live in where < 20% tip makes you a cheapskate? in every U.S. tipping guide not written by a self-serving waiter, the rule of thumb is 15% pretax for standard service, 10% for substandard, and 20% for excellent. feel free to spend your money however you see fit, but don't go judging people negatively because they don't do as you do.

It makes me cringe that some people don't tip 40%. If you don't, you are an embarrassment to your friends and family and do not deserve to eat out.
