HADES: Battle out of Hell

Wife was hooked on this for a day but when she beat Meg and died and had to fight Meg again, the game lost her completely.

Bosses should stay dead.

Probably the best game I've played all year, scratches that Binding of Isaac itch but also nails a ton of other stuff.

No. Aren't Souls games Roguelikes? When you kill a boss, its dead.

Roguelikes are basically procedurally created areas with a boss at the end of each area [usually], and to beat the game, you have to complete everything in 1 playthrough. If you die at any moment, you have to restart from scratch and do everything again [permadeath].
I think Roguelites [which is what Hades is afaik], each time you die, you are basically awarded with something to help in the next run as well as new story pieces. It why its so lauded, as it makes a repetitive sub genre of the gaming medium, a little more fun to play. The art direction, music, voice acting and story are just so wonderful.

Dying should be seen as a learning experience, ala the Souls games, so you can get further and further in the next run.

I dont like this sub genre but I really enjoyed Hades for a large portion of the game. By the end, I wasnt really too high on it like the current GOTYs are though, due to the repetition. I actually looked forward to dying each time, in the beginning, just to see more of the palace and get more story and character dialogue.

Souls games are more like 3D metroidvanias and are definitely not Roguelikes/Roguelites.

Well Jojo explained what roguelikes/lites are like but just wanted to let you know there are only
4 bosses
in the entire game. Once you get used to each area and the enemies in their respective zones you can get through the whole game in about 20-30 minutes depending on your build.

It is definitely worth practicing if either of you enjoyed what you played of it! Hope that can encourage you guys to try it again.

Im with your wife on this one.

Started playing the game around 12 and 4 hours went by fast. Beat meg, then again, then again, then again, and i just now got to the second level boss. And im like, god dammit i gotta do all this shit again?

Ive played rogue games, but ive also gotten some sort of upgrades to not make the easier shit seem tiresome.

Im not done yet, but im fearing that its coming sooner rather than later..

Trying different builds and using new boon combinations, eases the tedium. It took me around a 1O runs to beat the game, so it its not hard at all.

But youre gonna need to beat the game 1O times for the true ending, and a few more times for the epilogue.

Have you been using the Darkness you pick up on mirror upgrades or your gems at the house contractor? Those permanent upgrades help quite a bit. I'm not sure if you meant that you already picked up things to make it easier or if you were talking about other rogue games in general.

Yeah, I'm maxed out on the 2nd tier of the mirror list, got 6 weapons now too. I've given everyone a gift, except Zeus.

That contractor, i have upgraded some things, but boy do they seem useless. Money and health from urns? Of which are rare to find? Or is it that healing area, I'm thinking of..?

Wish there was more. Reminds me of grinding on other games, where i go through thr earlier levels to level up, but in these rogue games, that's mostly gone.

We watched someone run through the whole game in 25 mins so I guess fighting the bosses every time isn't that big of a time waster. Of course he was a literal God at the game (lol)

Ah metroidvanias is what I was thinking of

I'll give credit where it's due. The game doesn't suck. Everything in fact is stellar. Voice acting, animations, everything. Its just the redoing everything that feels like a chore after hours. Mjght turn on God mode just to get a playthrough in tbh because I don't want annoyance of repeating everything to ruin the experience for me.

I can record a run for you guys if you would like. My best is less than 16 minutes with the Twin Fists.

Also, yes to your God Mode suggestion. DEFINITELY helps you and doesn't prevent achievements or progression. In fact, you can earn everything with it active and for each death it adds more defense to your character.

How do you get god mode?

I believe its in the options menu. It reduces damage you take each time you die up to 80% damage reduction
Honestly the whole fun of the game is getting that first run where everything goes right. God mode just cheats that out of the player. Its like if Dark Souls had an easy mode. Its just not the same.

Id suggest finishing it without it for the first time, then using it in later runs to finish the story [if you want].

I saw it an hour or so ago. Been playing ever since. Got to the 3rd level maybe 5x now and I just turned it off. Ugh. Cant stand doing the same shit over and over.

Is there any benefit to be giving repeated gifts to the same god?

I enjoy getting different loadouts. At least once I was using the spear with repeating attack and a chain lightning effect. It just melted shit.
