the funny thing is you do not realize you are denied the option in the UK/Japan as the tip is built in to the hourly wage.Tipping culture is bullshit. I'm glad I have lived in England/Japan where we don't have this shit.
If I want to give someone more money for something, then that's my choice, it shouldn't be a "moral obligation".
There are only two systems that I know of:
- Hourly wage is artificially low (in Ontario $2 below minimum wage) and servers rely on tips to get to minimum wage and above but you as the customer have discretion based on service level on how much per hour that person will make serving you
- Hourly wage is high building in the cost of tip per hour regardless of service level and with bad service or good you are paying the server regardless
Which of those two systems give you the choice in terms of adjusting the servers hourly wage while serving you?
