Had a waiter confront me outside over a tip

Being an Australian, I'll never understand why the fuck you yanks "tip". We just pay and get outta there. Shit is so much easier.

I've waited tables when I was young and loved getting tips. That being said, I'm completely opposed to the concept.

Firstly, working in a restaurant I noticed that although my job as a server was hard, it was not harder than the cook's job, or even the bus boys or dishwasher's. We all worked our asses off except for the hostess, who has a pretty easy gig.

I could not fathom how I deserved tips and the cooks did not. The primary reason why people leave their house to go out and eat is for the food. They don't come out just to have me smile and be nice to them.

And then if you extend that outside of the restaurant, it makes even less sense. How they hell does a doorman deserve a tip? I didn't ask him to open the door for me. Same with a washroom attendant. He hands me a towel, big deal. That's not worth a tip. I can get my own fucking towel, especially if it means I don't have a creepy guy standing outside my stall looking at his watch timing how long I crap.

But somehow you don't tip your mechanic. Even though getting your car fixed is much more important than someone bringing food to your table. And you don't tip the plumber, even if you're really appreciative of how he showed up on time and went out of his way not to damage your walls further, even though it would've made his job easier. And why don't we tip them? Because they're paid well? If that's the criteria then we should tip Wal-Mart employees.

I still leave 15 - 20% when I go out to eat, but not because they deserve it, but just because it's expected and the social norm, and it's worth the money to not get in a debate over it. But ultimately servers are going to lose because I find myself eating at places where you order at the counter more and more often because tips are not expected at those places. That's the future of restaurants. Places that have traditional servers are going to go out of business as more and more people stop going there.

Absolutely beautiful post friend.

I don't understand tipping, why should I give you extra money for doing
your job?

You tipped $5 on a $200 bill? The waiter should have raped you, except you would probably like that. Your tip should have been $20 at the very least.

Lol, Americans are weird.

I'm Portuguese and we don't tip waiters. I mean, some people tip waiters, if they want to be nice, but there's no rule or expectation regarding that.

I get that they don't make much money, but hey, that's life. It's his boss's responsability to pay her a decent salary. I'm already paying for the food that i'm eating, on which, btw, they're making between 300% and 500% profit. I don't have to hand out tips on top of what i'm already paying.

Again, i get they don't get paid much. But guess what: many other jobs don't get paid much and they don't receive tips.

If you wanna tip someone, fine. It's very nice of you. But to make a rule out of it? That's pathetic. It's even more pathetic to bitch about percentages. A tip is a donation, essentially. You should donate whatever you feel like donating.

The waiter's life is hard. So is mine, and they don't tip me.

The over use of the word cuck has really become extraordinary on this forum.

You can really get a sense of who the real "cucks" are on this platform by their need to project it onto everyone else at nauseum, thx for exposing yourself.
You're obviously a beta and you sound poor.

You are seriously a fucking loser. I see now why your boyfriend left you and your boss shit-canned you.

Did he approach you rapidly and aggressively with a full erection to establish dominance?

Was the famous Sherdog phrase "you sound poor" used, or "get a job loser"? He was probably a crackhead who didn't mind risking losing his job over a $5 tip.
