Had a waiter confront me outside over a tip

It's sad really, I literally have people itt talking to me like I should have been beaten up even worse, or should have had my food spit in or shit on.

It's that attitude that lets these waiters take the piss.

When people say "oh but if you don't tip you wont get good service", so you're basically rewarding someone for being bad at their job? Fuck that. Give me bad service and you'll sure enjoy cleaning up the mess I leave you.

We're talking restaurant here, not a club, unless you were bouncing at a restaurant, which lol @ that notion.
I gave you a breakdown for why the dude was pissed. Why didn't you just include the fucking tip on the goddamn card?

I prefer tipping in cash as I KNOW the people will get that whereas the establishment will take a slight portion of the CC tip in processing fees.

Also, there are restaurants that become bars/clubs at a certain time so they have bounce staff all night.

It's not a counter argument, it's reality. It's your choice to be the miserable person no one likes. You're the one who has to live it.

how do you know no one likes him? How did you make this assesment based off of what he's said?

he said from his opening post that he tips (and well), he just doesn't believe one should have to and that servers shouldn't act entitled when someone doesn't.

I don't like leaving tips on the receipt, have had servers add 0's to the tip amount and I didn't notice until later on.

I probably spend more on tips than you make in salary. Save your laughable lectures for someone else, server.

What you couldn't wrap your low-rent mind around is the principal is the crux of the matter.

I'm know that tipping $5.55 instead of $3.25 makes you feel like a big shot, but the entire practice is a net negative due to the grubby tax cheats in the service industry which you are/have been (doubtless) a part of.

I'm thinking of going in there tonight and apologizing, but it seems that everyone in here agrees that he was in the wrong and I was in the right, so I probably won't.
You shouldn't have shorted him so much on the tip, but he definitely shouldn't have put his hands on you. I wouldn't apologize to that guy.

Went to a restaurant with a few of my friends last night, just to grab a few drinks and appetizers, a place called BJ's.

We end up staying for about 4 hours, from about 6-10, and for the 3 of us our total ended up being almost $200 (mainly alcohol).

We usually try and go out once a month and every month it's someone else's turn to cover the bill, and this time it was my turn.

So, figuring that even tho it was $200, I figured it's not that fucking hard to bring out 3 damn drinks at a time and we only had 2 small appetizers. I only had $5 cash on me and decided that would suffice considering it was just mainly alcohol purchased.

So after I pay with my card, I leave the $5 on the table, we walk out and sit on the bench while my friends smokes a cigarette and we continue to catch up. The waiter comes out side a minute later in a frenzy, screaming about this and that and how I'm a cheap fuck and how I shouldn't go out to eat if I can't afford to tip and shoves me to the ground.

He ends up saying "$5 on a $200 bill is unacceptable and I should go fuck myself", and then he goes back inside. My friends ask if $5 is really all I left? And I said yes, and they said why didn't you leave a tip on the receipt with your card? So I guess they took his side in the matter and they talked me out of going inside the restaurant and complaining.

How much do you goes tip for drinks? Was I in the wrong?

Tipped $5 on $200 bill because mainly alcohol

Should have left no tip then as $5 is just insulting and will be seen as a purposeful insult. Might as well have tossed a coin at him.

Still he is out of line following you out to tell you off. As a professional he needs to accept there will be cheap asshole's in the crowds he serves.

You have to understand TS that each server is only assigned so many tables and they earn their money per hour on those tables mainly through the tips. So you took up a ton of his time regardless of what you ate or drank and held the table so others who tip more could not get it.

I didn't know the restaurant was the server's cash cow? His time is "worth" what his employer pays him, no more, no less. I'm sure the proprietor is happy with the $200 in sales of highly marked up alcohol. Nobody really cares (nor should they) about some grubby tax cheat getting shorted out of a couple of bucks.

Cliffs:

-Horrible taste (BJs)
-Cheap as fuck (2.5%)
-No self defense skills/awareness (punked)
-Fake friends (watched you get punked)

In Korea, China, and Japan, you paid $5 too much.

Tipping is an absolute ridiculous practice. If someone does an exceptional job then fair enough, give them a little extra as a thank you for making your evening pleasant, but just for doing your job, for doing literally what you're paid to do? Fuck that.

Why are Americans bitch made over wait staff?

In many jurisdictions outside N.America the tip is built in automatically to the service.

So you have no choice and are paying that even if your service is crappy.

So the US model is superior as you really can reward or punish good or bad service.

But because its not built it in (and it could be) you are EXPECTED to tip when service is good.

When I see people say they are OK with places like Europe where its built in but they say they do not tip in N.America that just outs them as cheap and hiding under the system. Would they really prefer to be forced to tip on every meal in N.America whether service was good or not via it being built in? Because if not, then they SHOULD tip when it is good and not built in.

The guy whining about having to tip thinks he makes more than me? Lol, how cute. I've never worked in the service industry.

If you made a decent income you wouldn't be outraged about spending only 5.55

Whatever you are trying to say you are not saying it well.

I touched upon above why the U.S (N.American) system of optional tipping is better than much of the world where it is forced as part of his hourly wage.

If you prefer to be forced to pay on all service regardless of quality I would ask why? If you say you prefer the N.American system but then don't tip then you are just a cheap skate hiding within the system because if everyone took your view the restaurants would be forced to build it and force you to pay up.

This. Bad service shouldn't be automatically rewarded.

Your friends are pussies!!! They sound like left-wing SJWs. And yes 5 dollars tip is nothing on a 200 dollar bill. I'll leave that to another discussion.

The biggest problem I have is the waiter laying a hand on you. You should've gone in, complain to the manager and make a scene. What he did was assault. Under tipping does not warrant such an action. In fact, under no circumstances, should someone push someone else to the floor. You should've done what my dad did and pretend to be hurt. I would've gotten that asshole fired. I would've fired back, "How much does your normal patrons order? Guess I'm too cheap and should've taken my 200 dollars for 3 people somewhere else. And I want that 5 dollars back. I did not tip you for you to shove me to the floor" Then go on to lecture him about how tipping is mandatory and that his "services" warrant nothing from me.

I usually tip 1 dollar per drink. You should get some real friends with balls, fam.

I can get that but to leave $5 on a $200 check may not have been meant this way... but would come across like a "haha, fuck you pleb".

Next time, if that's all you have for a $200 tip ask your buddies to help you cover it a bit better and pay them back.

You aren't fooling anyone. You have the mind and laughable rhetoric of a server. Tell us more about how they make less than min wage (as if anyone should care about this).

I've never complained about "spending $5", in fact I've stated numerous times that I would be willing to pay 4-5x more than menu prices if it meant servers get tipped $0 (preferably paid close to this as well) or completely eliminated as a profession all together.
