I have no idea if the girl is credible. Just discovered the story like twenty minutes ago. They were convicted, though, so obviously somebody believed her.

The honest fact is these sorts of sentences quite often are looked at as a "enough rope to save yourself OR hang yourself with" sorta thing. If the defendant goes through all the evals and treatments and comes out the other side a better person then more power to them.

If the defendant does not, which is often the case, then you can throw them in the slammer for a couple years then.
