Gunnar Nelson wasted his career

We thought he was a good striker until he stood with Ponzi. We thought he was a good grappler until he rolled with Maia. In conclusion, he wasn't really that good. That's the difference elite competition makes, and the very reason other organizations get no respect.

He's a martial artist first and fighter second. I don't think becoming champion was ever his intention. Also, He runs a huge gym in Iceland. He seems to be living a good life.

Can't believe he's only in his early 30s lmao. If he isn't injured I don't see what's stopping him from coming back.

Gunnar needed to switch to a more talent rich training camp

As a Ponzinibio fan, I always enter Gunnar Nelson's threads just to taste the tears of his fans that are always crying over that knockout.

I thought he was dealing with injury a few years back? Maybe never recovered fully. He also was on the receiving end of some seriously BS scorecards and refereeing jobs..., I will never be able to understand how Ponzi was allowed to blatantly eye poke Gunnar the entire fight until the finish....I mean I had never seen anything like it ever before and the ref did nothing it should have been a DQ way before it was over, it was one of those fights where I questioned how honest the setup was.

Ponzinnibio always sticks his fingers out. He does it on purpose, think hes had a quite eyepoke situations in different fights?

man i miss gunnar but he never really looked undersized to me , he just got done dirty against pokezinibbio
And here we go!

His father was never a fan of harsh weight cutting. Still insane that he only cuts 5 lbs to make 170.
Bald goof needs to introduce 165. I used to be against the idea of extra weight classes but I'm starting to change my mind.

That either sounds great or we will have guys holding up 3-4 divisions becoming champ champ champ champ

He doesn't fight frequently enough either, he always has these longggg breaks between fights, way too inactive.

I don't think he had the discipline, style, or inclination to reach the very top regardless. He's a BJJ phenom but that came naturally to him, he got his black belt in around 3 years. He isn't the type of guy to move to ATT later into his development for an overhaul of his game that would give new life to his career. He seems content to be an elite grappler who would still lose to a guy like Rick Story.

Lightweight is a tougher division, so simply moving down would not have solved his problems. It's not as if he reached his ceiling but then ran into the hugest guys at WW and just couldn't overcome the size disparity. No, he's losing to guys who take their careers seriously and have worked on filling the holes in their game.

He's basically a BJ Penn type who actually managed to try even less. At least BJ was with the Marinovich bros and really took it seriously for a stretch of time. Gunnar didn't even do that. His idea of traveling for a camp is going to SBG, which is itself a lower tier gym that Conor is criticized for not getting away from to maximize his own potential. That says it all.

Wasted his time being conor's lap dog only to be replaced by another lap dog named dillon danis.

Ponzi gauged his eyes out, he needed to wait for the replacement.

This argument sounds a lot like what people will say with Vannata... what could have been for him (Vannata) at 145.

I must say, I loved watching Maia slice and dice this fool (Nelson) when they fought, talking all that head about being a better BJJ fighter than him.
