Gunnar Nelson wasted his career

He was Conors training partner for years. They are a very similar size. Gunnar could have cut down if he actually wanted to

Could've easily gone to 155

This is one of my biggest pet peeves, Conor did the same shit, look at how well it worked out for him. There are exceptions like Whittaker, but 90% of the time you should be cutting a significant amount of weight

Ya, he definitely should have dropped to lightweight when he came into the UFC. Perhaps he planned to if he lost, but then he won 4 straight at welterweight and established himself as a contender in the division, so figured he'd stay.

I agree that he had more potential at lightweight. He walks around at ~ 175 lbs, which gives him virtually no chance at contending for a welterweight title.

just needs to sure up his wrestling holes...
Love when people say stuff like this. My peach, you don't "sure up" your "wrestling holes" in a couple of months or even years if you want to compete with elite wrestlers. If you don't have a wrestling background, you're fucked if you try wrestling with the wrestling elite who have been wrestling since an early age. Sure, there are a couple of exceptions, but they are exceptions and not the norm for a reason.

Everytime I look at his career I cant help but see wasted potential. The guy is a very decorated fighter( BJJ/Karate) and if he went to lightweight he would have had a wayyy better career.

He was very talented, had the striking and the ground game to pose so many problems at 155. He probably would have eventually gotten a title fight if he fought as lightweight too.

But he chose to stay at 170 where he would get manhandled and out powered. He took some bad beatings too. Now his career is a train wreck with a bunch of bad losses and he hasn’t fought in almost 2 years.

Yes, exactly, just a waste. Kelvin same thing, thought he should have stayed at 170. I seen bigger people than Kelvin make 170. Same thing with Gunnar, he could have made 155.

Fighting has allot to do with mindset. If you heard, GSP gets extremely nervous before fights where his mind starts to race.He sounds miserable before a fight. He is the opposite of the calm stoic ice cold with not emotion fighter that Gunnar and Fedor are.

I like the mental aspect and really appreciate fighters like fedor and Gunnar. However, maybe they have a lazy edge to them by being too calm? Maybe people like that do well in hitting thier state of mind that is ideal for a fight...I think its called the beta state of mind...but in life maybe they tend to not push themselves in training as hard as others.

What I notice about fighters is their style of fighting reflects their way of thinking. You can tell by the way both Fedor and Gunnar fight, they live in the present, and are mindless of the past and future. They go with the flow and just react at that moment. They are free in being themselves and don't plan on being anything else. Its what makes them special fighters but also can work against them in their goals.

Gunnar wasted his career but why should I care if he doesn't. I am still glad I got to see him fight and look forward to what he can teach or how he trains other fighters in the future.

I thought he was dealing with injury a few years back? Maybe never recovered fully. He also was on the receiving end of some seriously BS scorecards and refereeing jobs..., I will never be able to understand how Ponzi was allowed to blatantly eye poke Gunnar the entire fight until the finish....I mean I had never seen anything like it ever before and the ref did nothing it should have been a DQ way before it was over, it was one of those fights where I questioned how honest the setup was.

Very talented fighter but people over estimated him thinking he was on Maia's level before they fought.

Generally,. it's not a really good idea for a fighter to go down in weight at the middle/end of his career

At least in Kelvins case he got a title fight in his wrong weight class 185. Dude just cant put the Burritos, Chilli fries down. Probably goes to that ice cream shop next door to kings mma alot too lol

I think that mellow zen mindset Gunnar and Fedor have is one of the best in mma. They are calm and can be passive at times but strike brutally when they find an opening.

Gunnar has a big nice gym in Iceland and lives a simple life. Wouldn’t surprise me if he doesn’t come back

Ponzinnibio always sticks his fingers out. He does it on purpose, think hes had a quite eyepoke situations in different fights?

man i miss gunnar but he never really looked undersized to me , he just got done dirty against pokezinibbio

Losses vs Burns, Edwards, Ponzibibio, and Maia... Why do those names sound familiar?
Oh, they're the best welterweight fighters in the world, that's why!

Waste of a career? So, pretty much anyone who never won a UFC championship sucks. Am I doing it right?

Yes, and don't forget that anyone who loses is past his prime and was never that good to begin with

That’s why a lot of BJJ guys don’t stick with MMA, it’s really easy to just run your school and live a comfortable fulfilling life without the stress of MMA

Recently rewatched him vs Alex Oliveira
What a sick brutal finish
I don't think every fighter has the goal of being the best ever or getting a belt, I think he just loved the sport and was happy to play at it a high level

He could have easily made 155 if he wanted to, unfortunately he decided to stay at 170. I agree that he could have been a force at LW and perhaps still can be.

Dude who knows, weight cuts can break fighters. Some fighters can, but a lot can't.
