Is 16 really crazy low? That seems right to me. I'm surprised it's 18 in some of those states. Utah? I guess they are overcompensating. I do remember growing up that it was 14 in Hawaii until some time in the early 2000s I believe. That did seem low. And mind you, that was entirely due to Native Hawaiians wishing it to remain that low. I guess because traditionally they married younger.
A lot of states also have laws that legally allow you have to sex with someone that's like 3 years older or younger starting at 14 until 17 or whatever. Basically acknowledging that teens are going to have sex. The age of consent is about protecting younger people from older sexual predators.
I was mostly referring to all the 14s on the Euro map. No, it isn't from the standpoint of sexual maturity and that's the basis. It just feels really sketchy on both a psychological and (presumably) socioeconomic standing front as the gap in age disparity grows.
